The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) addresses the physical, cognitive, psychosocial, sensory, and other aspects of daily living. The OTA supports an individual’s or a group’s participation in everyday life activities and occupations to meet the local needs of the community. Clients may need therapy due to a physical injury, a disease process, aging, or cognitive problems from mental illness o

r alcohol and drug abuse, or to improve quality of life. Occupational therapy assistants are employed in hospitals, outpatient facilities, skilled nursing facilities, mental health facilities, schools, community agencies, and home-health care.

Today is Disability Independence Day, marking the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. This landmark civil rights law expanded opportunities for millions of Americans by protecting against disability discrimination and improving access to education, employment, transportation, and public life. More than 35 years later, the ADA is about more than accommodations. It is about creating environments where every person has the opportunity to thrive.

As future Occupational Therapy Assistants, our students are preparing to make that vision a reality every day. Occupational therapy empowers people of all ages and abilities to participate in the activities that give life meaning—whether that means returning to work, succeeding in school, caring for family, enjoying hobbies, or simply maintaining independence in everyday life.

Today, we celebrate the progress made through the ADA and recommit ourselves to advocating for accessibility, inclusion, and meaningful participation for all. Together, we can help create a world where every individual has the opportunity to live life to its fullest.
