Today’s quote is from G.K. Chesterton, an English author, philosopher, editor, and literary critic. Tradition often gets a bad name, but as Chesterton says, it simply means giving a voice to those who have come before us rather than blindly submitting to the loudest trend or meme.

A classical education prioritizes the voices of those who have come before us, voices that have endured for centuries and shown to be valuable and true. This is why we read great literature, why we study history and its greatest figures—because we have only a limited time with students. So we choose the best that the Western Tradition has to offer.

🌳 Great Oaks Teachers Have Returned! 🌳

Today we welcomed over 66 new and returning faculty to our 2025 Workshop Week! We discussed how a Classical, Liberal Arts Education is necessary to equip students to identify truth properly so that they can act virtuously.

Special guest, Jon Gutierrez, presented an engaging session on how to apply the Trivium to our teaching to best address the needs of students at each stage of their learning. Teachers finished the day working with their grade level or subject groups to begin applying what they learned to their curricular plans for the imminent school year.

Definitely a productive and joyful day as we set the stage for students’ return!

💡 Thought-Provoking Tuesday: Classical Wisdom in Modern Times 📚

This week is our New Faculty Orientation and today’s quote by G. K. Chesterton comes from part of the classical education training that we provide new teachers.

By “soul,” Chesterton is speaking of the Traditions that enliven a culture. As a classical school, we are stewards of the great Western Tradition. This is not simply one culture, but a progression of ideas and values, derived from a canon of Great Books, all of which span across multiple cultures over several millennia. Ideas like the sanctity of human life, freedom from tyranny, the pursuit of human flourishing, government for the people, the pursuit of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness, and etc.

By reading enduring literature, contemplating timeless art and music, and studying the important lives and events that proceeded our time, we discover a rich heritage of great ideas extending deep down into the soil of the past.

By tending to and preserving these roots we nourish healthy growth during our lifetimes and maintain a strong channel through which the nutritive wisdom and virtues of the past can fertilize the hearts and minds of our children to bud and branch out in new and virtuous ways. Thus the Tradition is passed on and liberty endures.

🎨 Throwback Thursday!

Last spring, Ms Calley took her art class outside to enjoy the lively spring weather and paint en plein air! French for “in the open air,” this is a classical technique for painting directly from observation in the open air, rather than from memory or a photograph. Monet and impressionist artists popularized this practice, which is especially useful in capturing the way the movement of light can alter a landscape. Monet painted the same location over and over again at different times of day, showcasing dramatic shifts in tone and imagery.

🌿☀️ Using acrylic paints, Great Oaks scholars sought to capture the beauty of the season while embracing the classical tradition of studying and creating art from life.

🏛 Get to Know Our School of Logic–Enroll Now for Fall 2026 🏛

The School of Logic (grades 6-8) is the second step in the Trivium. Once the foundation is set in our Grammar School, students move to the logic stage, where they start to make sense of the information they've gathered. This is akin to constructing the frame of a building. Scholars in the School of Logic learn to think critically, analyze information, identify patterns, and understand the relationships between different ideas. They develop logical reasoning skills and learn to discern truth from fallacy.

We're Great Oaks Academy, a tuition-free classical charter school in Farmington (K-5) and in Eagan (6-10th)! We will add a grade each year until we are K-12.

Each year we celebrate our Kindergartener's completion of their inaugural year as a scholar. Students showcased their learning to their parents, recited poems, and sung the Pledge of Allegiance, the Continents Song, and even several songs in Latin.

💡 Thought-Provoking Tuesday: Classical Wisdom in Modern Times 📚

Today we are revisiting Leo Tolstoy and his classic novella, “The Death of Ivan Ilych,” which is one of the books that our teachers have been reading in their summer book group. A key theme of the book that we saw with the last quote we examined is the question of what it means to live a good and meaningful life.

Ilych is suffering a slow, painful death, and not only does he realize that his "ordinary" life was actually terrible because he was obsessed with achieving status, but he is almost entirely left alone with his sufferings, having alienated his wife and children. His friends are superficial and the only person who is willing to stay and comfort him is the faithful, Gerasim, his butler's assistant. Gerasim serves as a foil to Illych and his fickle family—though he owes Ilych nothing, he devotes himself to comforting Ivan when everyone else has fled.

Ilych's pursuit of status, approval, and “respectable living” has not just deprived him of true contentment and fulfillment, it has created conditions that have poisoned his own soul and has poisoned others. This is a powerful reminder of the choice that lies before each one of us: our lives can be aimed at virtue in such a way that edifies others or it can be aimed incorrectly and so result in poisoning those lives we are to bless. Each decision, each word, each action will either cultivate life or death in us and in the lives around us—we can be a poison like Ivan or a balm like Gerasim.

Tolstoy's point is clear–aim your life carefully at what is true, good, and beautiful, or it will not just be you who suffers the consequences.

📚Learn Like Adams 🇺🇸

President John Adams is a particularly good example of classical education. His Grammar education focused on what all good Grammar schools should – reading, writing, and arithmetic. As he grew, the study of Greek and Latin was added to his curriculum, providing him such an excellent foundation that he was able to enter Harvard when he was 16 years old. At Harvard College he received a Liberal Arts education, continuing in classic languages, as well as logic & rhetoric, geometry, history, philosophy and theology. These courses, especially the study of oratory and rhetoric, benefited him as he pursued a career as a lawyer, writer, and eventually a statesman.

Adams himself wrote extensively on the topic of education and its central importance to the preservation of civic liberty, publishing articles on the topic and even broaching the necessity of liberal arts education in personal letters to family and friends.

For Adams, education was not simply preparation for a career. He believed a Liberal Arts education best develops a person's reason, moral character, judgment, and ability to participate responsibly in civic life. And his life demonstrate this – for him, learning was a lifelong habit, and he continued to enrich himself, and as a consequence, enriched our young nation and generations to come through his study of history, classical literature, and theology.
