Experience the true francophone culture of the Midwest through traditional Missouri-French music and films to wrap up this year's Festival de la Francophonie! Co-sponsored by our FHS Chicago-Midwest Chapter, join us for a special evening of the “Tales of the Francophone Midwest” with featured animated shorts by visual artist, Brian Hawkins, and the screening of a gripping documentary about the French community of Old Mines, Missouri (La Vieille Mine) by Montréal director, André Gladu. Explore the unique and enduring history of French culture in the heart of the FHC!

But wait…ce n’est pas tout! Following the screening, you’ll have the chance to speak directly with the artists, connect to people in Old Mines, and enjoy a complimentary cup of steamy bouillon, a Missouri French foodways tradition. Kids can join in on the action too as they participate in fun activities led by the Alliance Youth Program instructors. You won’t want to miss out on this final hurrah of our month-long celebration of La Francophonie!

⚜ Bonne Fête à l’Acadie! Happy Celebrations to Acadia!

✨ Acadia (without the "r") represents a colony of New France in northeastern North America. The French government specified land bordering the Atlantic coast, roughly between the 40th and 46th parallels. Acadia existed as its own entity from 1604-1713, after being chartered by Henri IV of France.

📣 "Arcadia" comes from the Arcadia district in Greece, which meant "refuge" or "idyllic place". An alternative theory suggests that the word is derived from the indigenous Canadian Miꞌkmaq language -- Cadie means "fertile land".

Being an identity doesn't stop. It's a year around commitment.

🇺🇸 Last fall, a member of our team attended the Missouri Folklore Society (MFS)'s Annual Meeting from November 3-5, 2022, in Hannibal -- "America's Hometown". Taylor looked at how folklore does/not embody traits of Colin Woodard's book entitled American Nations within the state.

💻 She is currently preparing a joint (non-French) presentation for the 2023 Annual Meeting in Boonville, November 2-4. There is still time to send in a proposal!

⚜ David Cheramie was born in New Orleans but grew up on the banks of Bayou LaFourche. He graduated cm laude from Loyola University in 1981 with a B.A in History, and from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now called the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), in 1992 with an M.A. in French and again in 1999 with a Ph.D. in Francophone Studies. Upon returning to Louisiana after having lived in France for 7 years, he decided to become active in the renaissance of the French language and culture. He is a founding member of Les Amis de l'Immersion and Action Cadienne -- two organizations dedicated to the preservation of the French language through Immersion education. After having worked as the Director of Programming and Communication for the Congrès Mondial Acadien-Louisiane, he was named Executive Director of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana. In 2004, he was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. In 2007, the Conseil Supérieur de la Langue Française, a branch of the Québec Provincial Government, named him to the Ordre des Francophones d’Amérique. He now spends his time between the community, his writing, his teaching, and the francophonie.
