The ACI Foundation has had a great first few days at the ACI Concrete Convention in Atlanta. Sunday and Monday were packed with meaningful conversations, as our team connected with members, students, and industry professionals to share what the Foundation is all about and how their support helps move concrete research, education, and innovation forward.

Our committee members also came together for productive meetings, dedicating their time to advance the programs and priorities that will help shape the future of the industry.

We still have today and tomorrow ahead of us. If you are in Atlanta, we would love to connect and share more about the work the Foundation is doing.

The first morning of the ACI Concrete Convention in Atlanta, GA brought together our 2026-2027 fellowship recipients for our Rise and Shine event. To kick off the experience, the awardees participated in a photo challenge throughout the convention, giving them the opportunity to build new connections with their fellow awardees and explore the many spaces within the convention venue.

The event was filled with teamwork and creativity, setting a strong and positive tone for the days ahead. We are proud to welcome this outstanding group of future concrete industry leaders to the ACI community.

What an incredible afternoon! Yesterday, the ACI Foundation and NEU: An ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete came together for their first co-hosted Summit, "Increasing the Pace of Change: Working Together for Better Concrete Across the Value Chain," in Atlanta, GA.

The afternoon brought discussions on key barriers across the concrete pavement value chain, meaningful collaboration among researchers, industry professionals, and experts from academia and government, and valuable idea sharing on strategies to accelerate the adoption of emerging materials and technologies.

The outstanding participation from every attendee made the conversation stronger. Thank you for engaging so fully and generously.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to the speakers and moderators. Your insights guided a productive and forward-thinking exchange.

The ACI Concrete Convention kicks off today, and we could not be more excited to carry this momentum forward. We hope to see you there and keep the conversation going.

A reminder that the ACI Foundation and NEU: An ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete will kick off the upcoming ACI Concrete Convention a day early with their first co-hosted Summit, "Increasing the Pace of Change: Working Together for Better Concrete Across the Value Chain," on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Atlanta, GA.

Drawing from ACI Foundation-funded research conducted between 2024 and 2026, the Summit will bring together researchers, industry professionals, and experts from academia and government to present findings on key barriers across the concrete pavement value chain and share actionable strategies for accelerating the adoption of emerging materials and technologies.

The ACI Foundation is pleased to announce the completion of a funded research project titled "The Role of Testing Conditions and Concrete Durability Issues in Chloride Binding and Desorption of Cementitious Systems," led by Dr. Mahmoud Shakouri (Principal Investigator) of Colorado State University.

This study examined how carbonation and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) affect chloride binding and transport in aging concrete. It is the first study to directly compare ASR-then-carbonation and carbonation-then-ASR deterioration sequences in Type IL cement mortar. The findings support more realistic durability assessments and service-life predictions for concrete infrastructure exposed to salts.

The project was co-funded by Colorado State University and endorsed by ACI Committees 222 (Corrosion of Metals in Concrete) and 365 (Service Life Prediction).

The Veteran Rebate Program has a new name: the Veteran Certification Assistance Program. This program offers any U.S. veteran with an honorable discharge, $250 toward first-time ACI certifications.

Thank you to CMEC Holdings, Inc., whose founding $125,000 donation has helped hundreds of veterans earn ACI certifications and build careers in the industry.

Now that the Veteran Certification Assistance Program is fully community-funded, there is a need for consistent industry funding to keep the program available. Donations are still needed to extend the program into 2027.

The ACI Foundation remembers Professor James K. Wight, ACI Honorary Member and Past President, whose five decades of contributions shaped reinforced concrete design and inspired generations of engineers.

A tribute written by ACI Honorary Member and Past President Ken Hover and Gustavo Parra-Montesinos, FACI, is featured in the Building the Future section of the October issue of ACI's Concrete International. We encourage you to read it and learn more about his remarkable legacy.

In his honor, the ACI Foundation has established the James K. Wight Reinforced Concrete Design Fellowship to support the next generation of concrete leaders.
