Precision agriculture is becoming more accessible through innovative, low-cost technology.

ABEN doctoral candidate Astina Joice, working with Dr. Igathinathane Cannayen, is advancing precision agriculture through research using Raspberry Pi and PhenoCam technologies to monitor crop growth and field conditions in real time.

Her work combines low-cost sensors, near-surface imagery, satellite data and machine vision to develop tools for in-field decision-making, including crop growth monitoring and evapotranspiration estimation.

The goal is to develop affordable, data-driven technologies that can help North Dakota farmers make timely decisions about plant health and productivity.

From innovative research to meaningful careers, our students graduate ready to make an impact.

During her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at NDSU, Dr. Humeera Tazeen tackled real-world challenges in sustainable agriculture. From improving greenhouse microgreen production and developing nutrient recovery strategies to creating decision-support tools that help farmers make more sustainable, data-driven decisions.

Through hands-on research, laboratory experimentation, greenhouse trials, data analytics, software development, and collaboration with industry partners, she built the skills needed to solve today's agricultural challenges.

Today, Dr. Tazeen is putting that experience to work as a Food Safety and Quality Assurance Coordinator at Abbiamo Pasta Co. while continuing her research and publication efforts.

At NDSU, our students don't just learn about agriculture; they gain the experience, technical expertise, and professional skills to lead the future of the industry.

Graduate student Wilber Akatuhurira is pursuing his M.S. in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at NDSU, where his research is helping unlock the potential of camelina, an emerging oilseed crop with promising applications in sustainable biofuels.

By studying how moisture affects camelina seeds and designing specialized equipment to improve drying, storage and processing, Wilber is generating critical engineering data that can support more efficient biofuel production and advance sustainable aviation fuel and other bio-based products.

Through innovative research like Wilber's, NDSU students are developing solutions that strengthen agriculture while helping build a more sustainable future.

Our precision agriculture team had an incredible week at the ASABE – American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Annual Conference in Indianapolis!

Congratulations to NDSU graduate students Niharika Vullaganti and Mohamed Salem for winning the student hackathon competition.

From the student robotics competition to research poster and oral presentations, our students, faculty and researchers showcased the innovative work happening at NDSU. The conference also provided an opportunity to reconnect with NDSU alumni and colleagues from peer institutions across the country.

We're proud to see our Bison advancing the future of precision agriculture and agricultural technology, and we're already looking forward to next year!

“This isn’t a textbook program,” said Isaac Mauch, an agricultural technology and biotechnology double major from Thief River Falls, Minnesota. “You learn it, you apply it and you understand why it works, whether that’s in the cab of a tractor, analyzing data on a computer or making real financial decisions that affect the farm operation.”

Big news! The NDSU Farm Robotics Challenge student team has been named one of the Top Five Finalists in the International Farm Robotics Challenge with their SoilXplorer Robot.

The recognition highlights the hard work, dedication, and innovation of the student team, along with the support of industry partner Michael Anderson and farmer collaborator Noreen Thomas, whose insights and contributions helped bring the project to life.
