Who knew bats could be so interesting? Phi Kappa Phi 2023 Faculty Lecturer Dr. Erin Gillam, that's who! She treated attendees in the Anishinaabe Theater to a splendid presentation this afternoon about her research; hands-on learning (yes, even with bats) with her students, interns, and grad assistant; and the wonders and perils of being a bat. Conversations continued with cake and coffee in the NDSU Art Gallery.

The Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Lecture was established in 2015 by President Bresciani to recognize faculty whose outstanding, high impact research, scholarship, or creative activity consistently supports NDSU's top tier research status and who have a proven ability to effectively present their research to a broad community in the land grant tradition.

Kalpana Katti is a renowned researcher in the field of biomaterials and has made important contributions in bone tissue engineering, cancer scaffolds and biomimetics. Her research group has successfully developed bone mimetic scaffolds that create cancer tumors in advanced stages of cancer metastasis to the bone, enabling humanoid testing of anti-cancer drugs, understanding late-stage cancer progression and developing new interventional technologies. Katti leads the NDSU Center for Engineered Cancer Test-Beds and the NSF EPSCoR Center for Cellular Biointerfaces in Science and Engineering. She has more than 190 publications in journals, conference proceedings and book chapters. She is named Fellow of American Society of Biological and Biomedical Engineering. She is an NSF CAREER awardee and a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Her many honors include the Waldron Award for excellence in research, the Peltier Award for teaching innovation and the 52nd Faculty Lectureship at NDSU. She received the Roon Award from the Federation of Coatings Technologies, the most cited award from the journal Colloids and Interfaces for 2004-2007, and the Presidential Scholar Award from the Microscopy Society of America.

Dr. Tom DeSutter focuses on improving salt-affected soils and reclaiming soils impacted by energy exploration. A major emphasis of his work is exploring innovative ways to reduce the time required for soils to regain their plant productivity potential after a disturbance. He has published 110 peer-reviewed research articles in a variety of leading journals. His work has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, crop commodity agencies and other national, state, and private sources. His honors include the NDSU College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources’ Larson/Yaggie Excellence in Research Award, H. Roald and Janet Lund Excellence in Teaching Award, Teaching Award of Merit from the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture and the Emil Truog Soil Science Award presented by the Soil Science Society of America.

Professor DeSutter’s talk is the first of two Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Lectures this academic year. Kalpana Katti, University Distinguished Professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been selected to give a talk during spring semester. Her lecture is scheduled for February 22, 2021.
