Day 2 of our countdown to the Falmouth Corner Preschool Open House!

Open House is tomorrow! Friday, March 6 from 10:00–11:30am.

Today I want to introduce (and brag on a bit) the two women who make this school so special — Ms. Jill and Ms. Shana.

Ms. Jill brings 18 years of experience teaching pre-k and kindergarten, plus a master’s in early childhood education. She has this beautiful way of weaving art, music, movement, and literature into everyday learning so it feels joyful and meaningful. She talks often about creating a caring community of learners, and you truly feel that when you step into her classroom.

Ms. Shana is both a teacher and a former preschool parent here, which feels especially special in a co-op like ours. She has years of kindergarten experience and believes deeply in the power of play. She loves our emergent, child-centered approach where learning grows from the kids’ own questions and interests. In her classroom, play is the foundation of learning.

Together, they create a space that feels warm, thoughtful, creative, and deeply respectful of childhood. We are so grateful for them.

If you’ve been wondering what Falmouth Corner Preschool is all about, tomorrow is such a sweet chance to come see it for yourself. We’d love to meet you.

Three day countdown 🤍

Our Open House is this Friday, March 6th, and we are so excited to welcome new families in.

This week our art board is all about sunrises, inspired by Georges Seurat and his pointillism style. The children have been creating their own sunrise masterpieces using tiny dots of color, and they are just the sweetest.

It feels especially fitting with daylight savings almost here. In a Maine winter, those brighter mornings feel like a really big deal.

New light, new beginnings, and a new school year ahead.

We can’t wait to see some new faces soon 💛

💗 Valentine’s Week at Falmouth Corner Preschool 💗

We had the sweetest week celebrating Valentine’s Day at Falmouth Corner Preschool!

The children decorated their own Valentine’s bags and loved delivering valentines to each of their 16 friends. 💌

On Thursday, we celebrated in the coziest way with Pajama Day (and it was also “P” week — we’re flying through the alphabet!). The children enjoyed pancakes, strawberries, festive drinks, and lots of laughter together. It was a morning full of friendship, kindness, and joy. 🥞🍓✨

Thank you to our wonderful families for helping make the week so special. We are so grateful for this sweet community.

🌷 Our Open House is coming up on March 6 from 10–11:30, and we can’t wait to welcome new families! Please visit our website or Facebook event page for more information.

We’re also looking forward to sharing more glimpses into our day-to-day preschool life as we get closer to our open house!

✨ A Look Back: The History of Cooperative Preschools & What It Means for Falmouth Corner Preschool ✨

At Falmouth Corner Preschool, we’re proud to be part of a cooperative early childhood tradition that’s nearly a century old — one rooted in parent partnership, community, play-based learning, and shared purpose.

🌱 Roots of the Co-op Preschool Movement
Cooperative preschools began in the early 1900s, when families wanted a more active role in their children’s early education. In 1916, the first cooperative nursery school in the U.S. was founded by parents at the University of Chicago who believed that children thrive when families and educators learn and work together.

By the 1940s and ’50s, the co-op model had spread across the U.S. and Canada, offering an approach to early education that emphasized collaboration, shared leadership, and strong community ties.

🤝 What Makes a Co-op Special
In a cooperative preschool, families are partners — not just observers. Parents help support the classroom, contribute to school leadership, and build meaningful connections with one another, while experienced teachers guide children’s learning. The result is a school community that feels deeply connected, supportive, and invested in each child’s growth.

🌼 Falmouth Corner Preschool: A Local Legacy Since 1974
Since 1974, Falmouth Corner Preschool has carried this tradition forward here in Falmouth. For more than 50 years, we’ve been a place where children build confidence, curiosity, and social skills — and where families form lasting relationships through shared involvement and care.

One of the truest signs of that community? Families return. Siblings come through the program year after year, and in some cases, former students return as parents themselves — a full-circle experience that speaks to the lasting impact of cooperative preschool.

A (slightly delayed) Friday update 🤍

Despite sickness making the rounds and the busy holiday season, we were so grateful to gather together for our annual Holiday Concert and Celebration. Being in the same room with families, teachers, and children was truly a gift.

Our sixteen preschoolers serenaded us with the sweetest festive songs, filling the space with joy, courage, and plenty of proud parent smiles. We also heard from our wonderful teachers, Miss Jill and Miss Shana, admired the abundant artwork created by our students, and spent time eating, playing, crafting, and sharing in a cookie exchange.

Most importantly, we came together as families and as a community, which is at the heart of what we mean when we say Falmouth Corner Preschool.

Thank you to our teachers and families for making this celebration so special. We are so thankful for this community and wish everyone a joyful, restful holiday season.

December has been full of magic here at Falmouth Corner Preschool! ❄️✨

We’ve explored animal tracks with Miss Rebecca from the Falmouth Land Trust, created the sweetest gingerbread art, danced our hearts out in music class, enjoyed snowy sensory play, and even made homemade gingerbread playdough together.

Our playground has been bustling with bundled-up little explorers, and inside, our students have been busy elves preparing for next week’s holiday concert, learning about different winter celebrations, and even tasting latkes with applesauce.

A special shoutout to Miss Shana and Miss Jill for helping our preschoolers master the art of bundling up for winter outdoor play!
What a joyful, hands-on way to wrap up the year. ❤️

Saturday Update (because the holiday season has me completely losing track of days!)

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families. Please enjoy a few examples of our Thanksgiving art projects in our post today!

Before we head into the heart of the holiday season, I wanted to share a quick reminder about our calendar and daily schedule.

Our academic calendar follows the Falmouth Public Schools calendar. This means our holidays, winter break, snow days, and summer break all align directly with the district schedule. Any adjustments—such as days for Parent Conferences, special events, or field trips—are brought to the parent group first so we can review and approve them together.

Our Daily Schedule, though always subject to small adjustments as teachers respond to the needs and interests of the children, typically looks like this:

8:30 — Arrival (Bathroom at drop-off)
8:30–9:00 — Open Play in the classroom with peers (a variety of centers and opportunities for exploration)
9:00–9:30 — Welcome Circle Time (songs, orienting to the day, movement, read-aloud, shared learning)
9:30–9:45 — Snack (Bathroom and handwashing before and after)
9:45–10:45 — Emergent Curriculum Time (guided play, inquiry, and exploration with teachers)
10:45–11:00 — Mindfulness Closing Circle (grounding, calming, and quiet tools)
11:00–11:15 — Bathroom and get ready to go outside
11:15–12:00 — Outdoor play, learning, and exploration
12:00 — Pick-Up Time

Happy Friday!

Our mornings in Falmouth have been brisk and breezy, and the leaves have fallen just enough for us to catch glimpses of the ocean from our parking lot! Inside, we’re cozy in our slippers, learning, playing, and building our community.

But FCPS knows that our little learners thrive outside too! Whenever the weather allows, we head outdoors, which is almost every day. It’s always worth the extra time to bundle up our students, and it’s a great opportunity to teach independence (anyone else mastering the coat trick?). Living in Maine, learning to dress for the weather is key to enjoying all the beauty our state has to offer.

October brought our first field trip of the year to Pineland Farms, where students explored pumpkins, hiked, visited animals, and even navigated the corn maze!

We also had a fall preschool meetup at Hurricane Meadows Fall Festival, giving families a chance to play, chat, and strengthen our wonderful FCPS community. 🌻
