Winfield Children's House Winfield Children’s House, the only Montessori-accredited school in greater Portland, offers a dev Winfield began with one Toddler and one Preschool program.

The Winfield Children’s House is located on the site of an original, small neighborhood schoolhouse, dating back to 1876. The building was renovated in 1987, and once again turned into a “house for children”. In keeping with the Montessori philosophy, the school was furnished with low, child-sized facilities which foster independence and subtly reflect to the children that they can master their ow

n environment. An expansion in 2000 added a second building along with a second Preschool program and a Kindergarten classroom. In May of 2007, the Winfield Toddler House opened its doors and became the first accredited infant/toddler Montessori school in the state of Maine. Winfield is accredited by the American Montessori Society, licensed by the Maine State Department of Health and Human Services, and approved as a private Kindergarten by the Maine Department of Education.

Careful scaffolding of new skills is a key part of any good educational model and it's definitely part of Montessori Education. When paired with the ability to choose, children are left with the deep knowledge that they are capable learners. When each new lesson is a 'just right' challenge and children are allowed to move at their own pace, life long learners are created.

Take reading for example: The process of learning to read starts with real life experiences, rich conversation, and falling in love with books and stories. Children also practice pre-reading skills such as matching, patterning and sequencing both with shelf work and through daily classroom tasks. As 3-year olds they play with language through rhymes and songs and practice honing their listening skills. Later, they isolate specific sounds from words, add the symbols, then work with the moveable alphabet to encode words. Through reading back their words, they solidify their ability to decode as well and before you know it, they're reading text from all around them! It feels easy, they aren't defeated, and they are excited about reading because it's not a chore.

In Montessori classrooms, there is an emphasis on materials that allow children to experience the concepts they are learning about- from the properties of 3-D shapes to the physical representation of numbers through the thousands place value.

It is important to us that children have the opportunity to use hands on materials for as long as they can and that their time at Winfield be an oasis of screen free exploration in a world of iPads and TV screens.

As part of the peace curriculum in Montessori classrooms, we seek to help children understand and fall in love with the natural world so that they will help to take care of it.

As Montessori educators, we look for opportunities to connect children with nature and use natural materials when possible, and at Winfield, we are really lucky to have a beautiful outside space, including a fenced in back woods and acces to Falmouth Land Trust trails!

Multi-age classrooms are a hallmark of Montessori education. The dynamic is modeled after home life where younger children learn from watching their older peers, older children deepen their knowledge through giving lessons to younger classmates, and everyone works together to care for their community.

In this diverse group of children, individuals come to accept and appreciate each other for their unique strengths and differences. There is no expectation of 'sameness', allowing each child to work toward their own goals without direct comparisons to same aged peers. Often, children can be found working together in collaboration, regardless of age, each student with their own meaningful role.

Montessori education fosters agency in children by explicitly teaching skills that enable them to care for themselves and their classroom community and then giving them space to act on what they have discovered. In our classrooms, children have the power to act on their observations, which develops a sense of self-confidence that permeates their entire day and every interaction.

Toys, Books, and Clothing- Oh My!

We have concluded our annual giving tree donations with lots of wonderful things for the Maine Children's Home. We are constantly impressed and surprised by the Winfield community and the generosity of its members. Whether it be fulfilling a giving tree wish tag or offering to drive the items all the way from Falmouth to Waterville, we appreciate each and every contribution. Have a joyful holiday break!

We couldn't be more thankful for the Falmouth Land Trust and all that they offer! This is a recent photo of Rebecca from the Falmouth Land Trust coming to visit our school to talk to the children about nocturnal animals. The children were engaged the whole time and especially like looking through their 'owl eyes'.
