The research is clear— natural, family-style learning environments (read: a variety of ages all together) are where it’s at in early childhood!

When children of varying ages, developmental levels, and abilities spend time together, the littles learn from watching and mimicking the big kids, and the big kids learn to be early leaders as they help the littles. It’s a beautiful thing to watch, week after week!

And there’s more! The big kids also learn how to play gently, are given opportunities to cooperate, learn empathy and understanding. And the littles learn autonomy and independence by crawling away from mom, and doing their best to keep up!

But honestly, one of MY favorite things about mixed-age learning environments (like we have in our music classes), is how they discourage unnecessary comparisons by the grownups. Our kids are each on their own, unique trajectory and each are worthy of being celebrated!
