A teacher just shared this story, and we had to share because it warmed our heart. ❤️

A student came to our two-week English Camp literacy class because a woman in the food relief line at the mosque told her about us. This lady was illiterate and knew no English.

What do you teach someone in just two weeks?

The volunteer decided he’d teach her how to write her name. He’d watch her proudly put her papers in her bag at the end of the day.

And at the end of two weeks? She could write her name!

English language learning provides practical tools for navigating a new country, but it also builds the confidence and affirms the dignity of our new neighbors. Glad to be part of it!

“I volunteer with For the Nations DC to show the love of Jesus to my immigrant neighbors through English classes, practical help, and Gospel proclamation,” said volunteer M.E. Shehata who serves with the adult English classes.

She added, “This work matters to me because it’s an easy way to reach the world, and I don’t even have to travel! I really enjoy the students who are so respectful and grateful. I love teaching them, interacting with them and laughing with them as we learn together. Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to be part of this fruitful ministry lead by YOU!”

Classes start in 3 weeks! While back-to-school season is exciting, the reality for our refugee and immigrant neighbors is that learning English takes time.

So does navigating a new culture and connecting to a new community—which can feel isolating and discouraging.

Volunteer roles include teaching an adult English class, caring for early learners, helping students with English conversation practice, assisting with family services, and more!

Job openings include Early Childhood Room Lead, Early Childhood Assistants, and Operations Assistant. All roles are part-time and located at our Alexandria campus.

Because people like you give, little girls like her can attend early childhood classes (all in English) at no cost while their moms are studying English. At For the Nations DC, more than 300 people of all ages attend classes every year—learning English, hearing the Good News, and getting practical help so they can thrive in our community.

Loving our neighbors—and flourishing together in friendships—is a blessing.

An FTNDC volunteer recently said, “Every week, I am excited to come spend time with my new friends.”

So many volunteers and students come to For the Nations DC because of the people. Teaching English is only one part of it!

Day after day, people slowly build relationships that go beyond classroom roles, and both volunteers and students start saying “my friend.”

That’s the beauty of the cross-cultural community that God has built at FTNDC. Relationships matter! We’re so grateful for the volunteers who invest every week in these relationships, inside and outside of the classroom.
