Dear Friends and Family,
I’m excited to share that I am representing Gonzaga College High School in the second annual Heart’s Cry, DC School Fundraising Challenge. Over the next 3 weeks, I will be fundraising to support all of the wonderful work being done at the Casa Providencia Orphanage in Panama, Central America. Casa Providencia is the only orphanage in Panama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of Panamanian orphans who have cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Their goal is to rehabilitate and restore each child, and to find them a forever home through their Panamanian adoption agency.
In February, I traveled with my mom and sister to Panama to volunteer at Casa Providencia. Working alongside Casa staff, I got to know all of the children and found ways to connect with them through play, music and therapies. Many of the children are nonverbal and some are unable to walk. But, that did not mean we couldn’t have fun together. We played and sang and put on shows for the kids. It was joyful to see all the love that pours into the orphanage and how happy and loved the kids who live there are.
This year, Gonzaga is competing against 5 other schools (Georgetown Prep, Stone Ridge, Holy Child, Episcopal and St. Stephens St. Agnes) in a challenge to see which school can raise the most funds for this amazing cause. The annual expense to care for one child is $50,000. With the goal of supporting one year of Casa care, we are hoping to raise $50,000 between now and May 8th. Please join me in meeting this goal! As part of this fundraiser, I have chosen to dedicate the funds we raise to care for Janet, who is an orphan at Casa that has Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC). ACC is a congenital brain disorder where the structure that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain is missing. You can learn more about Janet, Casa Providencia and the DC School Fundraising Challenge in this link and this video.

MORE INFO ON HEART’S CRY MINISTRY AND CASA PROVIDENCIA
The Heart’s Cry Ministry was founded by Matt and Misty Hedspeth, who were inspired to begin their work with Heart’s Cry during a trip to Panama when they were seeking to adopt their first child. During that process, they witnessed first-hand the harsh conditions of the orphanages in Panama and were especially saddened to see how orphans with special needs were treated due to lack of resources. Feeling moved to serve, Matt and Misty relocated to Panama in 2008 with the mission to advocate for the orphaned and abandoned children of Panamá.
In 2018, Heart’s Cry Ministry proudly opened the doors to Casa Providencia Orphanage which receives and advocates for special-needs children who have been abandoned and abused. Their website is www.heartscry.org.

On behalf of Heart’s Cry and Janet, we thank you for your generosity and support. Your donation truly makes a difference and with your help, Heart’s Cry can continue caring for Janet and welcome many new children into Casa Providencia.
Sincerely,
Henry M. (Gonzaga ’28)
