DC Metro Area Chapter - Virginia Tech Alumni Association The DC Hokies are the local chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association in the DC metro area.

From social events and recreational sports teams to family outings and community service projects, we have something for everyone! With so many members, we strive to provide an array of activities, events, and community service/volunteer opportunities sure to interest everyone. Many of our events are seasonal (football watching parties, intramural sports) or annually (NCR Job Fair, Chili Cook Off, and Hokie Open Golf Tournament). Other events happen on a regular basis like the Hokie book club, volunteer events such as blood drives and visits to the Carpenter Shelter, and business/networking happy hours. Hear from Cheng-Chia "Fred" Wu, assistant professor at Virginia Tech's Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, as he shares groundbreaking research on the blood-brain barrier, the brain's natural defense system that protects against harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins, but can also block life-saving treatments.

Register to join us on Thursday, October 1st at 6pm for Tech on Tap: Advancing Brain Cancer Treatments.

Cheng-Chia “Fred” Wu, an assistant professor with Virginia Tech’s Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, will discuss his research on the blood-brain barrier, a protective network of cells that shields the brain from harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins, but which also prevents many beneficial drugs like chemotherapies from doing their job. Wu's work focuses on using low-intensity focused ultrasound to allow cancer treatments to reach brain tumors.

"Old School" Reunion: Pat McGee Band, Freddy Jones Band, and Jackopierce Live in Tysons!

If you attended VT in the 90s or 00s, you probably spent your weekends rocking out to the Pat McGee Band, Freddy Jones Band, or Jackopierce. Each of these bands helped create the soundtrack to our college days, and they've never appeared together on the same stage... until now! On November 7th, they'll perform for one night only at the Concert to Rock Cancer at Capital One Hall in Tysons, VA, benefiting We Rock Cancer's lifesaving mission of early skin cancer detection. There will also be free skin screenings on site, so you can come for the music and get checked while you're there.
