Practicing with a metronome is an effective way to help your young musician develop a steady sense of tempo and rhythm. In order to ensure success and reduce frustration, have your student begin at a slow tempo with the metronome. Once your student is comfortable with that slower tempo, have him or her increase the tempo by small amounts (6-8 beats per minute). Do not allow him or her to go beyond that tempo until they can play ACCURATELY at that speed, remaining on track with the metronome consistently.

Thanksgiving may be over, but we can still enjoy this beautiful "circle of 5ths" piece by the late George Winston. To me, this piece evokes images of a misty, chilly fall morning, with a cascade of leaves fluttering down from the trees.

Camden enjoys putting his music theory knowledge to the test as he challenges Ms. Debbi to a game of "Chasing the Turkey." It was a fight to the finish, but he emerged victorious by a feather!

FAQ: Is my student required to participate in the Christmas Recital?
No student is ever required to participate in any recital. However, performance is an important part of musical growth. And at Piano by DESign, we believe music is a gift that is meant to be shared with others! Our recitals are intended to be a celebration - of the students, their achievements and growth, and of music itself! The Christmas recital is a studio favorite and students look forward to participating in it year after year! We work hard to ensure that every student is prepared for success, and encourage everyone to be a part of this fun event!
MOTIVATION MONDAY: Challenge yourself to have an attitude of gratitude for the next week and notice how your perspective changes!

McCade has been working hard on his dynamics, specifically crescendo (gradually getting louder) and diminuendo (gradually getting softer). Enjoy this "colorful" duet of a beautiful sunset!
HOW CAN I MOTIVATE MY CHILD TO PRACTICE?
Check out these tips from prodigies.com:
1) Use a reward system - simple rewards such as a sticker on a sticker chart, a word of praise, or a hug from parents, can be a strong motivator to practice.
2) Create small goals - have your child choose ONE thing about their playing that they want to improve during the practice session.
3) Stick to regular practice times - ensure that a specific time is set aside at least 4 days per week for your child to practice, and involve your child in the discussion.
4) Allow your child to play for you - especially when they are preparing for a performance such as a recital or festival, this performance can build confidence in their preparation!
5) Use lots of praise - even if your child is struggling, keep encouraging them to work toward their goals.
6) Build in "play" time at the piano - allow your child some time to explore at the piano. This may be playing some old pieces just for fun, working on an original composition, or just "noodling" around!
Excuses keep us from accomplishing our goals and reaching milestones! What excuses do you need to quit making in order to make progress?
Halloween Piano Puzzles have been a huge hit with our beginner students! Adelaide won the memory matching game with Ms. Debbi in her lesson this week!

For a fun, SPOOKY variation on your typical warm-ups, try playing your technique or scale exercises in minor keys! The way to do this is to LOWER the 3rd by 1/2 step.
If the 3rd is on a SHARP, play the natural key (for instance, in D major, you would lower the F # to an F). If the 3rd is on a NATURAL (white key), play the FLAT (for instance, in G major, you would lower the B to a B-flat).
Have fun turning your scales into SPOOKY-sounding exercises!
Please join me in wishing these students a happy OCTOBER birthday!
