These 80,000 Steelhead fry are at day 14 post hatch and have almost completely absorbed their yolk sac. They will begin actively searching for food that we will give them early next week once most of the fry are up off of the bottom.

Conneaut Lake report!

Another easy collection today. This was number 4 for the season and the weather was nice enough to get into Godfrey Run today.

We don’t get many Winter days like this on the Lake Erie shoreline.

These are Steelhead fry that are only on day 1 post hatch. These fry are from our first spawn on 11/20. They will live off of their attached yolk sac for approximately 2 weeks before it will be absorbed and they will begin eating a dry feed diet that we supply them with.

This egg picker makes hatching Steelhead a breeze. The picker sends a light beam through the egg. If it senses any opaqueness, the egg is given a shot of air and knocked into the “bad” side. If the egg is in good shape, water flushed it from the wheel and sent to the good side.

Over One Million “green” Steelhead eggs between our last 2 spawns. At a 50 degree water temperature, these eggs should take about 30 days to hatch.

Steelhead spawn #3 was another success. 685,000 eggs were “taken”.

Steelhead brood collection #3. Lots of fish to choose from again. A big “Thank You” to the students from Cranberry School District that came up to help us out.

Another beautiful Fall day on the Lake Erie shoreline at Trout Run. The first collection of the season went very well with help from Linesville, Fairview, and Tionesta Hatcheries and the Lake Erie Research Unit. These fish will be held at the Fairview Hatchery and begin spawning them next week after getting some time to “ripen” in the raceways. There will be 7 more collections spread out throughout the Fall and Winter. After these fish are spawned they are released back to the Lake Erie tributaries where the anglers can enjoy them.

Water has finally cooled enough to do our final splits for Steelhead smolt grow-out. There is roughly 750 fish/net full.

These 10”-14” Northern Pike were stocked into Presque Isle last week as extras since Lilly and Walker Lakes were stocked with their allocated amounts. These fish were stocked out of the Tionesta Hatchery and were about 7 months old.
