Let me begin by stating I only believe in homework for very specific reasons; first, to practice a new skill and second, when working on an ongoing/lengthy project. Homework for the sake of doing it is punitive and pointless.

Please read, think, pause and consider, before canceling. As I think about ways society has pressured their citizenry to "fall in line", the most used seems to be some sort of shunning. Today we have labeled it "canceling". This is a powerful device to use against people and historically, was used for the most socially disapproved behaviors. Ones that would endanger the community as a whole. The rules regarding it's use were clear and well established. People knew what acceptable behaviors were and were not. With immediate access to any and all behaviors via the internet, everyone has become the judge, jury, and executioner for whatever behavior they find personally offensive. In the United States, adults have the right to a couple of things under the Constitution. The first is to be considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The second, the right to meet your accuser. Both of these rights have now been rendered null and void with the immediacy of cell phone photography and texting, istagram, tik-tok, facebook and a variety of other social media sites.

Having five children, it is important to me that I do the same. Leaving places better than they were when I arrived is just a way of life for me. I do it for my children, my students, and your children. It is why I don’t use plastic bags, why I mulch my food waste, water my plants with a bucket, plant food, and a variety of other things my children shake their heads at. When we lived in Southern California, we used the bath water to water plants and recycled everything possible.

So how do we teach our children to make friends? With some children it is very easy. They are naturally outgoing and enjoy being with other people. It is not something that has to be taught at all. As children grow, it is however, important to continue to teach kindness, loyalty, and listening skills, so that their natural instincts to make friends will extend to keeping those friends as they grow. As social animals, we humans feel a need to be connected to other people. We are drawn to groups and their activities out of curiosity and the desire to be a part of that intangible thing, friendship.

We need to be challenged every day. So we are prepared to take what are perceived as un manageable events in our lives and see the opportunities they offer. As human beings, we are great problem solvers. It's what we do, what we are programmed for, if you like technology. At the core of our being (primarily our brain), we need to run up against that mountain throughout our life. Think of how dull life would be if everything was easy and fluid always. Our brains would turn to mush and we would begin to lose interest in many things. We would simply cease growing mentally.

As an observer of human interaction between parents, their children, and the world in which we live. These are my thoughts on how we might stay focused on the goal of working together for the success of our children and the enjoyment of life in general.
