🇺🇸 This morning, sixth-grade student Riley K. delivered an announcement to all students at Fairview High School and Mayer Middle School about the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. The heartfelt message reminded students what happened that day while emphasizing the importance of remembrance, unity, compassion, and carrying those values forward.

"As students, September 11, 2001, happened before we were born," the announcement read, in part. "That makes it especially important for each generation to learn about this moment in our history and to remember the people behind the events—not simply the date or the headlines.

"Today, we encourage everyone to take a moment of quiet reflection and to consider how we can honor those we remember by treating one another with the best of human qualities: kindness, respect, compassion, and empathy. On this 25th anniversary of September 11, we remember. We honor. And we will never forget."

🇺🇸 Fourth graders at Gilles-Sweet Elementary spent time this week learning about the significance of Patriot Day and the courage, service, and sacrifice associated with Sept. 11.

As part of the school’s new America Project, made possible with support from the Fairview Park Education Foundation, students helped place American flags around the Gilles-Sweet grounds in remembrance of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

In Miss Kenney’s class, students discussed local heroes and wrote letters to Fairview Park police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. They also created “Never Forgotten” patriotic ribbons for the school’s hallways.

“They wrote thoughtful thank you letters to our local police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, expressing gratitude for their bravery and sharing personal stories of times emergency responders helped them,” Kenney said.

Students in Mrs. Rushnok’s class explored stories connected to the World Trade Center and Sept. 11, learning about Philippe Petit, guide dog Roselle, and several individuals who demonstrated courage and helped others that day. Students created paper bag books to share what they learned with their families.

Through these activities, our fourth graders had an opportunity to learn, reflect, and remember. ❤️🤍💙
