Hello — and welcome to steamHouse.

If you've scrolled back through this page, you've already met us. Those photos go back years: young people building things, making things, figuring things out together [name a couple of real activities from the archive if you like — e.g. robotics, gardening, animals]. That's not a marketing campaign. That's ten years of real Saturdays in Golden, Colorado.

Here's the short version of who we are. steamHouse helps young people develop the things that matter most and get taught the least: how to think clearly, decide on purpose, treat people well, and care about what's true. We've been doing it as a practice since 2015. This year we became a nonprofit — a 501(c)(3) — so we can open it up to more families.

We're not a school and we're not trying to replace one. We're a place alongside it, where kids grow into capable, thoughtful people — and have a good time doing it.

The most impactful lesson for any human is the understanding that we have an automatic mode of thinking that we use nearly all the time. Mostly it works but it is subject to biases and incomplete, faulty logic. By applying effort, our conscious thinking mode gives a more rigorous consideration with a greater context in mind.

In the stress and distraction of life, where resources and time are limited, we have an understandable bias toward first thoughts, the familiar and the actions we ultimately must take to have any effect. But that bias short circuits our brilliance as thinking and creating Homo sapiens. We have ability to consider our Purpose and Possibility with more novelty and potential effect, and that is our SuperPower.
