The 2016 West Virginia Governor's Honors Academy at FSU

We are deeply saddened to announce that Xavier A. Garcia, a long-time and respected teacher at the Governor's Honors Academy, died in April. We will miss the energy and boundless confidence he brought to the Governor's Honors Academy and its students.

In addition to teaching at the Academy, Mr. Garcia also served as associate dean one year and as the faculty representative to the Governor's Schools Advisory Council

Xavier Angel Garca, 65, of Fairmont, died on April 24 after a long illness which had intensified in the past year and a half. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Dykhoff Garca, his daughter Carolyn Rose Garca Thele and son-in law Dan Thele, and his son Dominic Javier Garca

The students had a very entertaining week. They got to practice their math skills during Casino Night. A huge thank you to Doug Squire and Cody Hood for hosting such a fun night. GHA had a special guest come in to host Trivia Night. Thank you Chris Edwards for coming in to test our students' knowledge. The students had a very enjoyable time. They did prove to be some of the brightest students in West Viriginia. On Saturday, GHA had their annual zombie apocalyse game. The RAs were all made up as zombies.They are suppose to chase the students, while the students are trying to complete various tasks all over campus. The students were able to throw water balloons at the zombies in the attempt to escape. Everyone was so tired after the game, but there will still huge smiles on their faces.

In Professor Susan Cato-Chapman's class, the students were blindfolded and guided all over campus. During Professor Costello's class the students were seperated into groups, and asked to build a bridge. The bridges all had significantly different designs, but were all strong and sturdy. Dr. Hokom's class decided to take a stance on chairs. The students are commited to not sitting in chairs for the rest of GHA. In Professor Dan Hollis's class, the students are learning about freedom of expression and speech. They are creating a Wall of Free Expression, which he will display at the end of GHA. A huge thank you to all of the faculty members at GHA for being so dedicated to the students' education. Thank you for being passionate and excited in what you are teaching in the classroom.
