Day 16: EVERYONE IS HOME! 🏡 We *almost* missed our connection to Pittsburgh— I was the LAST ONE on the plane ✈️ before they shut the doors! It couldn’t have been closer, but WE MADE IT! 🥳

I want to thank all of my travelers for being great sports, staying flexible, and being great people to travel with. 🧳 We had a great time and even though I said this was my last tour for awhile, they already have me considering what’s next! 😉

Again, thank you to everyone who traveled with me, trusted me with their children, and made the whole trip an experience I will look back on with so much happiness! We loved Greece and Italy (and London lol), but there’s truly no place like home. 💙💛

Thanks for following along! Ciao! 🇮🇹 🇬🇷

*UPDATE*
Kolby’s group made their connection! They held the plane for them! ❤️

Day 15: Our flight from Athens departed 45 minutes late, causing us to miss our connection to Pittsburgh. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Kolby’s group has also been delayed in Canada and will miss their connection as well. 🫠 Our DC crew MADE IT HOME SAFELY! 🙌🏼 I will say, British Airways has been wonderful and so accommodating! Breakfast and dinner vouchers, snack and hotel vouchers, and little overnight packages with a tshirt, toothbrush, etc. I guess we COULD complain, but we’re in a pretty posh hotel with people we like, so honestly we’re just taking it all in stride. Five of us will fly out in the morning to Philadelphia and then to Pittsburgh. The other eight in my group will leave in the afternoon with a direct flight to Pitt. Let’s all send some good vibes into the universe that we have no more issues! 🇬🇧

Day 14: That’s a wrap! Today was our last day in beautiful Greece 🇬🇷 and it seems we saved some of the best for last!

We began the day with breakfast at our hotel, boarded our bus to pick up our “expert local guide”, then headed to THE Acropolis. 🏛️ We learned that every city had an acropolis (the highest point of a city), but the acropolis in Athens is known as THE Acropolis because of all the temples 🛕 built to workship/honor their goddess Athena (who beat out Poseidon as the head god in Athens because he offered the gift of water [which wasn’t good quality] and Athena offered an olive tree with which the Greeks could make oil to maintain their fires). Athena, goddess of wisdom 🦉 and military, was born from Zeus’s head. After visiting THE Acropolis, our travelers also had photo ops with the Parthenon (the temple built for Athena 🧠), Olympic stadium 🏟️, and theatre 🎭. We then traveled to the Acropolis museum, where students could view an archeological dig site and ancient artifacts unearthed during the restoration and exploration of THE Acropolis and surrounding sites.

From here, some of us enjoyed a Street Food Tour 🥙, featuring hand selected restaurants and foods by our amazing Tour Director, Stella. The group enjoyed traditional Greek Spinach and/or Cheese Pie with filo crust, bougatsa, koulouri (Greek bagel 🥯), Greek dough balls with honey 🍯 and hazelnut, souvlaki (or gyro— my personal favorite!), and last but not least- baklava!

We had some free time for shopping 🛍️ (of course) and exploring before dinner 🍽️, which consisted of fried cheese 🧀 (so good!), some sort of meatball and French fries 🍟(ps- Greek ketchup can’t hold a candle to Heinz!), and chocolate chip gelato 🍨.

We ended the evening serenading our bus 🚌 driver, Yannis, with our tour tradition of singing “Country Roads”. Y’all, he cried! (Not sure if he was touched or if our soprano section needs work! 🤣)

The adults ended the evening celebrating Diana Minutelli’s first OFFICIAL day of retirement after over 35 years of working in the public school system! Congratulations, Diana! If there was any situation deserving of an OPA, it’s the end of this chapter and the beginning of a new one for you! Salut! 🥂

Tomorrow our groups will depart at three different times, three different transfers, on three different airlines ✈️ and we will head home 🏡 with a little more perspective, gratitude, and (hopefully) wanderlust. It’s been a wonderful tour with wonderful students, adults, and staff. I couldn’t be happier. OPA! 🍽️ 🍾 🎉

Day 13: Epidaurus, Mycenae, and Corinth, oh my! Today we set off to tour ruins before arriving at our hotel in Athens. We just happened to luck out and catch a vocal group singing 🎶 in a temple with AMAZING acoustics! We also toured an ancient amphitheater 🎭 that is still in use. Our last stop before lunch was Troy, as in the Trojan 🐎, Helen of Troy (actually Sparta). Amazing views!

After stopping for lunch we were treated to a pottery workshop, where this fourth-generation potter explained the process, tools, and pieces made there. Of course, we also had time to shop. 😉

We had a few hours of free time at our hotel to go swimming or rest before our Greek 🇬🇷 Evening dinner, which also included singing, dancing 💃🏼, and plate smashing 🍽️! OPA! We also learned how they make their own olive oil 🫒, were treated to a tasting 🥖🫒, and beautiful views of the city 🌆.

Tomorrow we will venture out early to continue our tour of Athens. Until then, goodnight and OPA! 🇬🇷

Day 12: Wow! Day 12 already?! We visted an archaeological site, the temple of Apollo, and the oracle.

Then we drove to Argolida by bus and enjoyed a BBQ cruise! We all agreed you could leave us here (I’d have to transport my husband and children) and we’d be great! We collected sea glass and shells and rocks and had a delicious dinner of vegetables, pork on a stick, tzatziki sauce, wine, and peaches!

We’re all checked into our hotel and read for tomorrows adventures! Our tour director, Stella, continues to be amazing!

Day 11: After a wonderful day and night resting and relaxing, we woke up in paradise 🌺 and had a great breakfast buffet 🍳 before boarding our bus. We traveled to a Meteora monastery, a “town suspended in the middle of the sky.” ☁️ We toured and learned about the monastery and life in the community. The nuns pray eight hours a day, work eight hours (cooking, cleaning, making candles, working the shops, beekeeping, etc.), and rest for eight hours. There are 32 nuns and 2 “novice” nuns in training, from the ages of 22-85. Some of us had to wear “loaner” skirts because women are not allowed to wear pants in the community, nor show their shoulders or knees.

After our guided tour we got back on the bus 🚌 and drove to Delphi, passing five other monasteries on our way. We saw sheep 🐑 crossing the road, GORGEOUS scenery, 🏔️ and there are stray/community cats 🐈 and dogs 🐕 EVERYWHERE. Apparently, none of the children in my group have ever seen such creatures as they MUST stop, pet, and photograph every single animal! 🤣

We finally arrived at our charming hotel(s) and enjoyed dinner together in the village. Spinach pie, rice, some sort of meat dish, and fried dough with honey and strawberries 🍓 was on the menu. For the rest of the evening, the group had free time to shop 🛍️, wander, grab gelato 🍧, etc., before some of the big kids headed down to the discotheque! 🪩💃🏼🕺🏼

We will head out bright and early tomorrow to tour beautiful Delphi! 🇬🇷

Day 10: Γεια σας και καλώς ήρθατε στην Ελλάδα! (Hello and welcome to Greece!) 🇬🇷 Holy moly, this place is amazing! 🤩

We disembarked from our overnight ferry/cruise ship 🛳️ at 5:30 this morning and drove to a little village for lunch 🥙 and shopping. 🛍️ The food was excellent and very affordable in the Meteora Region 🪨 and we’ll return tomorrow for a guided tour of a monastery there. ⛪️

After lunch we headed to our GORGEOUS hotel 🏨 for some much needed relaxation at the pool. 🏊‍♀️ We just finished dinner, which was truly DIVINE!, and consisted of a buffet of, well, everything! We actually feel like we’re finally on “vacation” here and I think I’d be perfectly fine just staying here forever. 🇬🇷
