Our personality is something that has been given to us by God, but it also is shaped by our life's experiences and upbringing. We often use our personality to deal with situations, how we handle life and express ourselves. Depending on our emotional and spiritual health, it can help us or harm us.
The enneagram is just a tool. It does more than just tell us what our personality type is, but it gives us resources to know ourselves better. It has been likened to an internal GPS system, in that it helps us recognize the behaviors and attitudes that rise up in us when we are either healthy, on autopilot or unhealthy. Beth McCord calls this "the rumble strip" that helps us identify when we're veering away from living out our identity in Jesus.
Our only freedom is found in Jesus and the finished work on the cross. We have been called to walk free from shame, condemnation and fear. As we explore our personality, there will be times we won't like what we see there, especially as we learn the core motivations of our personalities.
But the important key to remember is that because our identity is found in being God's beloved child, chosen and forgiven, we do not have to feel bad about what is in our heart, because God loves us unconditionally. He is redeeming our heart, which means he will take all that is wrong and bring glory out of it. We have to be willing to look at ourselves, non-judgmentally, in the light of grace and the Gospel, to begin real change and growth.
Let us memorize and pray this prayer often, if not every day:
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life." (Psalm 139:23-24 NLT)
