The Bats are Back in Town!!!

Long history of bats in the belfry here at the James A Beck House
Which is how we got our original mantle back that was taken out of the house to resolve a bat issue back in the 1970s.

But last night marked the first night of their return since we have been here.
Caught 1 earlier today but then later this evening we found another
flying down the hallway of the 2nd floor as it flew down the main staircase to the first floor.
We caught it and released it but after talking to previous owners it will likely return. So might be time to break out the Batmitten Rackets and find how they are making their way in.
Its always something...

Hey Des Moines. Looking good. Really. 🌽🎡

But while everyone is talking about the Iowa State Fair, we'd just like to casually mention that the very first Iowa State Fair was held right here in Fairfield in 1854.

We hosted it again in 1855 before the fair began making its way around Iowa and eventually settled in Des Moines.

So enjoy the butter cow. Eat something questionable on a stick. Ride the Giant Slide.

We'll just be over here remembering where it all started. 😉

You could cross this bridge on the Fairfield Loop Trail and completely miss one of its best details.

Look down.

Inset into the concrete curb are 171 ceramic tiles created by high school art students, many featuring drawings inspired by Fairfield's industrial history and Louden Manufacturing.

Cows. Weather vanes. Machinery. A "revolving head." Things get wonderfully peculiar when you start looking closely.

You'll find them on the BNSF bridge over the railroad tracks near Walton Lake.

So yes, ride the Loop.

But every once in a while, get off the bike and look around.

You might be surprised by what Fairfield tucked into the scenery.

Maybe your weekend doesn't need more plans.

Maybe it needs a paddle. A trail. A campfire. A place where the loudest thing competing for your attention is a bird with something to say.

You can fill a Fairfield weekend if you want to.

You can also leave some room in it.

Less crowds. More this.
