For decades, degrees were considered the golden ticket for employers, a shortcut to assess persistence and foundational skills. However, a tight labor market and equity commitments have challenged these assumptions, leading to the rise of the Skills-Based Hiring movement in the recent years.
Here are three paths currently happening in the industry with this movement:
🌟 Skills-Based Hiring Leaders (37%): Firms making tangible changes, increasing non-degreed hires by nearly 20%.
🌟 In Name Only (45%): Firms changing in name only, no substantial shift in hiring behavior.
🌟 Backsliders (18%): Short-term gains in job accessibility, but the change doesn't stick, resulting in decreased non-degreed hires.
Identifying occupations ripe for Skills-Based Hiring involves focusing on roles with a significant gap between the qualifications sought and the current workforce profile. Distribution managers, production clerks, computer programmers, and event planners are examples where at least 250,000 jobs could open up with adopting this practice.
