Jan 25 Therapeutic Tai Chi Series: Gathering Strength Into the Back

“The heart is the commander, the qi is the flag, and the back the is banner pole; the lumbus is the axle, and the qi is the wheel.”

Saturday 1/11 10:00 am - 12:30 pm “Rolling up your Sleeves"
through simple therapeutic exercises and partner work, participants will develop dynamic postural strength through retreating and releasing (lu) and learn a simple, complementary routine with advancing and expanding (peng) to benefit the lower back and pelvic region.

Saturday 1/11 1:00 - 3:30 pm “ Ebb and Flow"
participants will learn the complete "Four Sides" of Tai Chi that harmonize retreating and releasing with rising and expanding in four linked full-body exercises that integrate an experience of deep relaxation with energized movement and awareness.

All workshops open to everyone. Certificate participants should plan to take both morning and afternoon workshops.

Appointment times for bodywork and private lessons at Barefoot Living Arts in Fairfield will be available Saturday (before and after class), Sunday late afternoon, and Monday 1/27 in the morning and early afternoon.

Dec 07 Therapeutic Tai Chi
"Expansive Support From the Feet Up"

The archer’s posture and spirit embody the quiet concentration necessary for sensitive, unified movement.

Saturday 12/07 10:00 am - 12:30 pm "The Archer's Stance"
through simple therapeutic exercises and partner work, participants will learn a dynamic stance and walking method that develop leg strength, balance, hip flexibility, and breath coordination expressed in the fundamental “receive and issue” dynamics of yin-yang.

Saturday 12/07 1:00 - 3:30 pm "Expanding Upward and Outward"
through simple therapeutic exercises and partner work, participants will learn the whole-body exercises "Grasp Sparrow's Tail," "Cloud Hands," and "Wild Horse Parts Mane" that develop robust upper body support rooted in the release of tension into the earth, as well as therapeutic movement for the abdomen and digestion.

Chinese Therapeutic Movement Workshop
Refreshing the Lungs, Chest and Shoulders
Saturday, October 12

10:00 am - 12:45 pm “Cleansing the Lung” through simple therapeutic exercises, assisted range of motion, and self-acupressure, participants will explore the Chinese understanding of the Lung and its relationship to the sinuses and skin, especially during the autumnal "metal tiger" season. Particular emphasis will be given to opening chest and shoulders as well as the lower back.

1:15 - 4:00 pm “Nourishing the Breath” participants will explore the relationship of the Lung to the digestion and water metabolism as well as its role in treating complaints such as fatigue and constipation. Particular emphasis will be given to strengthening the abdomen through different breathing methods.

Sept 07 Chinese Therapeutic Movement Series: Exploring the Two Types of Qi

Saturday 9/07 10:00 am - 12:30 pm "Body Channels" workshop - through simple therapeutic exercises, assisted range of motion, and self-acupressure, participants will explore the Chinese understanding of the body channels as conduits of movement and communication, in conjunction with the biomedical concept of fascial connections. Emphasis will be given to feeling and strengthening the movement of qi from the limbs inward toward the torso. Space limited to 15.

Saturday 9/07 1:00 - 3:30 pm "Qi as Breath" workshop - through simple therapeutic exercises, partner work, and self-acupressure, participants will explore the Chinese understanding of the breath as a source of health. We will also explore the respiratory diaphragm's action outward through the fascial system and channel qi. Space limited to 15.
