Singing Cedars School—The first and second grade classes had a field trip to learn about monarch butterflies. The naturalist at Jefferson County Conservation taught the students about monarch tagging and how this helps in tracking migration. The kids had a great time and even got to help with the tagging process!

This week at Singing Cedars, the grade school students gathered together to celebrate Michaelmas. This holiday, honoring the archangel Michael, is rooted in European harvest traditions. It highlights the ideas of courage and hope in the face of challenge.

The celebration began with Miss Priv telling a story about archangel Michael and the triumph of light over darkness. Then the students did some craft projects and ran through an obstacle course outdoors. It was delightful to see the older students guiding the younger students through the course with encouragement and warmth! The event ended with a communal lunch of soup and bread made by the students.

Nature plays a central role in the Waldorf curriculum. Rather than treating nature as a separate subject, Waldorf education often weaves the natural world into many areas of learning and into the rhythm of the school day.

Last week at Singing Cedars, Miss Priv led an outdoor activity to teach 2nd graders the concept of place value in math. In this lesson, three gnomes hid small, medium and large stones in the yard. The students ran through the trees uncovering and collecting stones in order to build a number!

What a beautiful first week it has been at Singing Cedars School! Watching our students settle into a new rhythm, meet new friends, explore, and learn in such a nurturing environment has been so special.

Despite the heat last week, children found delightful ways to engage with the natural world. From building swallow nests or finding a tree to sit under and practice the pentatonic flute in grade school, or playing with sand and water in early childhood, students were observing, getting their hands dirty, and discovering the little wonders all around them.

Rose Ceremony at Singing Cedars!!
Earlier this week Singing Cedars first grade students participated in an annual event celebrated on the first day of school. The first grade teacher, Ms. Juli, began this special celebration by sharing a story with the students and their parents. Then she presented each student with a rose representing growth, unfolding love, and the unique journey of each child. With roses in hand she led them over a bridge representing their “crossing” from early childhood to grade school. Parents watched with joy and pride as their children participated in this meaningful experience marking the beginning of their journey into grade school.
