The ASCE Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe Competitions (as well as other competitions such as the Hardy Cross Oratory Competition - last year we won first place and rights to the big traveling cup on display in the office) will take place this Friday and Saturday in Washington DC.

Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the Virginia Tech Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS) chapter is co-hosting a women’s history month event (free) with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) on March 13, 2018. The event will take place at the USDOT Headquarters in Washington, DC. Congratulations to CEIE Ph.D. student Mr. Benjamin Atsem who received a prestigious Dwight D Eisenhower Transportation Graduate Fellowship for 2017. The award is administered by the Universities and Grants Programs of the US DOT's Center for Transportation Workforce Development. Mr. Atsem is pursuing his doctoral research in transportation engineering with CEIE faculty Dr. Mohan Venigalla. Mr. Atsem is expected to graduate with Ph.D. in May 2019.

Dr. Girum Urgessa was a Keynote Speaker at an International Conference.
Dr. Girum Urgessa delivered a keynote speech on blast/impact response of structures at the 19th Symposium of Operational Applications in Areas of Defense (SIGE) in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. This international event was sponsored by the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), which is supported by the Brazilian Air Force. The event featured speakers from USA, Brazil, England, Sweden and South Africa. During his stay in Brazil, Dr. Urgessa also taught a short course on structural dynamics with emphasis on impulsive loadings.

Dr. Girum Urgessa has been named one of the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship (CREE) 2017-2018 Faculty Research Grantees. The center provides $4,500 grants for faculty and research fellows at George Mason University who are engaged in research on a priority topic of the center. The grants encourage multi-disciplinary approaches to issues in development and support the center’s mission of stronger connections and collaboration between George Mason and the real estate industry.
Dr. Urgessa’s research interests include dynamic response of structures subjected to extreme loads (blast and impact), the use of fiber reinforced polymer composites in structural design and retrofit applications, and structural stability of temporary structures. Dr. Urgessa is a licensed professional engineer. The CREE grant will support Dr. Urgessa’s research on new cement products and applications that provide better resilience, durability and safety for concrete structures.
