Today, Phi Iota Alpha celebrates the Dominican Republic’s Día de la Independencia, or independence day!

Following the Spanish colonial era, the country endured 22 years of Haitian rule. This period saw the suppression of Dominican culture and identity. However, a clandestine movement emerged, which envisioned an independent Dominican nation. The secret society “La Trinitaria” played a crucial role in organizing the uprising and ultimately achieving independence.

On February 27, 1844, after years of Haitian rule, a group of determined patriots, including Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella, led a successful uprising against the Haitian forces. This act of defiance marked the birth of the Dominican Republic as an independent nation.
