STEM – Apply 10/17/2017

Dear LAs (and former LAs),

The LA application for Spring 2018 is now OPEN, at https://cos.gmu.edu/stem/learning-assistants/apply/ ! I hope you'll consider applying to be an LA again (deadline November 3!). Remember that the professor also needs to apply to have an LA in their class, so if there's a professor you're interested in working with, please remind them to apply (and to request you in their application). Feel free to share the info below with your friends (or your students!) who you think would be great LAs. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Prof. Dreyfus

================

The STEM Accelerator is accepting applications for Learning Assistants for Spring 2018! Learning Assistants (LAs) are undergraduates in the College of Science who are interested in unique educational opportunities such as participation in undergraduate instruction, course innovation, peer-to-peer tutoring, and the chance to work closely with COS faculty. The commitment is 10 hours/week for the semester, and it comes with a stipend of $1500.

What does an LA do?
LAs will work with undergraduate students in a particular course to help them develop a deeper understanding of the important concepts and connections inherent in the course material they are studying. LAs work with students both individually and in small groups, in a variety of settings (including office hours, review sessions, flipped classes, and labs). First-time LAs will participate in a weekly seminar (which you can take for either 0 or 1 credit), and all LAs will be trained to ask questions that promote student discourse and that uncover student thinking and student difficulties.

How do I apply to become an LA?
You can apply to become an LA using the online form: https://cos.gmu.edu/stem/learning-assistants/apply/
If you have a particular professor in mind with whom you would like to work, please contact him/her in advance and ask them to request an LA through the same website. Both student and faculty must apply for a position.

What are the deadlines for applying?

The deadline for both students and faculty to apply is November 3, 2017.

I hope you'll get to explore this amazing opportunity! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

STEM – Apply Applications for Spring 2018 are now being accepted. Both new and returning LAs should complete the form below accessed via the Student tab.
