Tiny Hearts, Big Feelings ❤️

At this age, friendship is pretty simple: a hug, a kiss, a favorite toy to share… and sometimes another hug just because. 😊

These little moments are where children begin learning how good it feels to connect with each other.

Why do children around the age of two "claim" almost everything as their own? All you hear is "Mine!" or "I won't share!" And if there are two or three of them, they might even fight over things 🤔

This is the stage when a toddler begins to realize they are an individual separate from others. They try to protect what belongs to them, or what they think belongs to them. Anything a child gets their hands on during this time can suddenly become "mine."

So, what should you do? Scold them or force them to share? Or, conversely, let them take whatever toys they like, assuming they’ll "understand eventually"?

Interacting with children this age requires great patience and lots of repetition across various situations. At our daycare, the teacher always explains what we are doing and why. If a child gets upset, we talk about their feelings and suggest a solution. We never force them to share; instead, we simply suggest playing together.

As a result of this approach, children start playing side-by-side by age three, and by age four, they begin organizing group games on their own 🤩

How do you handle it?

Why does my child clean up at daycare… but not at home?

We hear this from parents all the time.

At daycare, cleanup is simply what happens when an activity is over. One child starts putting things away, the others follow, and then everyone moves on to the next thing.

No long reminders. No debate.

Sometimes seeing other kids do it is all the motivation they need.

Does your child have a “daycare habit” that somehow disappears the minute they get home? 😄

The other kids are already running around, building, digging, playing together… and one child is standing nearby, just watching.

It can be tempting to step in right away. Invite them to play. Find them a friend. Help them join the group.

But sometimes they don’t need help yet.

Some children need a few minutes to take it all in. Who’s playing what? Where do I want to go? What feels comfortable?

Five minutes later, that same child may be right in the middle of the sandbox with everyone else.

Sometimes watching is simply how they get started.

Does your child jump right in, or do they like to watch first?

Parents sometimes ask how to help a young child stay focused on one activity a little longer.

We get to watch that skill grow naturally.

Today, a few kids were coloring together. One finished quickly, another took time choosing every color, and someone kept checking out what a friend was doing next to them.

Then back to their own paper.

These ordinary little moments give children a chance to practice focus, make choices, and finish what they started. No pressure to “sit still and pay attention.” Just regular practice through activities that make sense at their age.

How long will your child stay with an activity they really enjoy?

When families visit our center, they usually ask about safety, meals, schedules, and activities. Those questions matter.

But one dad asked something that stayed with me: “Who will greet my son in the morning?”

It sounds like a small detail. For a young child, it’s actually a big part of feeling comfortable. A familiar teacher who knows their name, notices their mood, and gives them a little extra time on a hard morning can make the whole day feel different.

When you tour a daycare or preschool, I always recommend watching the children for a few minutes.

Do they come to their teachers naturally?
Do they ask for help?
Do they look comfortable in the classroom?

Children are usually very honest about how they feel.
If you’re looking for a daycare in Fairfax, we would love to welcome you for a visit and answer your questions.

Sometimes, the best activity is simply stopping to watch the rain 🌧️

For little ones, even an ordinary rainy day can turn into something worth discovering.

You can spend hours comparing programs, reading reviews, and looking through photos.

But sometimes your child’s reaction tells you more than any brochure ever could.

Do they feel curious when they walk in?
Do they start exploring?
Do they notice the other children or feel comfortable with the teacher?

Parents often pick up on those little signs right away. And they can make the decision much easier.

If you’re choosing a daycare or preschool for the new school year, we’d be happy to meet your family and let your child experience Nuances for themselves.

Our administrator is going on vacation, but no one is worried – there is a capable replacement 😎

One of my favorite moments each morning happens before the day has even begun.

As children walk into our lobby, many of them immediately start looking around for their friends. 😊

And not just the children from their own classroom.

Our classes spend time together, visit one another, and build friendships across different ages.

It's always sweet to watch a child light up when they spot a familiar face❤️

If your little one is ready to make new friends, we'd love to meet your family.
