Cirrocumulus clouds are recognized by their collection of cloudlets, which are usually grouped together at high levels. Composed almost entirely from ice crystals, the little cloudlets are regularly spaced, often arranged as ripples in the sky, sometimes referred to as a “mackerel sky.”
