Here’s What We’d Tell You: November 1 Is Not Your Deadline.

If a college says November 1, we'd love for you to think of that as the latest possible date, not the date you're aiming for.

Leave room for the things nobody plans on: a recommendation letter that comes in late, a supplemental essay that needs another round, a Common App hiccup, or simply realizing at 10 p.m. that you forgot something.

Give yourself a little breathing room. Future You will be very grateful.

Here’s What We’d Tell You: Your College List Should Be Getting Smaller.

By October, we'd rather see a student who knows why six or eight schools belong on their list than one who has 15 schools because they keep discovering more.

This is the point where browsing should start turning into decision-making.

Look at the things that actually matter: academics, cost, location, size, programs, campus environment, deadlines—and whether you can genuinely picture yourself there.

More colleges isn't necessarily more options. Sometimes it's just more work.

Here’s What We’d Tell You: You Don’t Need to Finish Everything Today.

October can create a weird sense of panic—everyone seems to be talking about applications, deadlines, essays, and “getting everything done.”

But college applications aren't one giant task. They're a bunch of smaller ones.

Figure out what actually needs to happen this week. Finish that. Then move on to the next thing.

The goal isn't to feel caught up. It's to keep it moving.

Things We Wish More Students Knew: October Is for the Details.

📝 By October, the big pieces of your application should be taking shape. Now start paying attention to the things that are easy to overlook.

Did you enter your activities accurately? Are your dates correct? Did you answer every supplemental question? Are your recommenders on track? Does every school on your list have its own deadline and requirements?

The little details aren't exciting—but they can make a big difference.

🎓 It's easy to treat admission as the ultimate goal.
But getting into college is not the end of the story. It's the beginning of another four years of learning, changing, trying things, making mistakes, and figuring yourself out.
So yes, take the process seriously.
Just don't let it become your entire identity.

💭 Early Decision can be a great option for the right student.

But "everyone else is applying ED" is not a reason to do it.

If you're not certain about the school—or haven't considered the financial implications—it's okay to wait.

There is no prize for committing the earliest.

👀 Parents, counselors, rankings, friends, social media—all of them can help.

But eventually, the student has to answer the most important question:

“Can I see myself here?”

Your job isn't to create a perfect application. It's to create an honest one.
