Did you know that, contrary to popular belief, Christopher Columbus's proposal to Spain was NOT initially rejected because his opponents believed that the earth was flat? Rather, they believed he underestimated the worldโs size. History tells us that King Ferdinandโs panel used the original value of the circumference (250,000 stadia by the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes) to determine the distance to India, and at first rejected Columbusโs proposal as too far a distance to successfully travel. Columbus is said to have underestimated the distance to India, according to some accounts, because he confused the Arab mile (used by al Maโmun, who ruled Bagdad from 812 to 833), with the Roman mile, calculating the Earth's circumference to be about 18,000 miles instead of the actual 24,901 miles. Regardless of the various estimates, measurements, units, and reasoning, in the end, Columbusโs voyage was approved and, โin 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.โ
