MATERIALS SPOTLIGHT: Through their work with the grammar boxes, children learn how nouns name things, articles announce the presence of a noun, and adjectives describe what type of noun. Through this work, we also introduce symbols for each of these parts of speech: a large black equilateral triangle for the noun, a tiny light blue equilateral triangle for the article, and a medium-sized blue equilateral triangle for the adjective. As children work with noun phrases, they begin to see a pattern in the article-adjective-noun arrangement of words. When this happens, we share an impressionistic chart of the noun family. This chart provides an image of the structure of a noun phrase with the article and noun close together and the adjective sometimes nearby. Elementary-age children love the idea that adjectives are a little like older children, as they don’t always have to be with a parent. Children also love making up their own noun phrases and illustrating them!

MATERIALS SPOTLIGHT: As children begin to move from the concrete practice of understanding the four operations (addition, multiplication, division, and subtraction), they enjoy having a more abstract form of practice to help them with memorization. One of the tools we use for this is the finger charts. Color-coded for the four operations (red for addition, yellow for multiplication, blue for division, and green for subtraction), the charts are organized in grids. Children can choose an equation (like 4+2=), place a finger on each addend along the edge of the grid, slide their fingers along the row and column until they meet, and then discover the sum. Different variations of the charts can be used in a series of ways, from finding and recording the answer, to experiencing the commutative law, to testing for facts children have memorized completely. Ultimately, the finger charts provide another fun form of repetition when children are starting to seek variety in how they can practice their math facts!

MATERIALS SPOTLIGHT: Soon after infants begin pulling themselves up to standing, we offer aids to their gross motor development. One of these is the ball tracker. This wooden structure has a track that declines at an angle, crisscrossing back and forth, with a base that acts as a tray. Children can put a ball into a hole at the top left and then observe the ball going down the ramps and coming out the bottom on the right side of the base. Although this seems like a simple activity, the process of pulling up to put the ball in the hole helps children develop their balance and strength. Then, placing the ball in the hole and retrieving it at the bottom helps their hand-eye coordination. Finally, as children follow the track of the ball, they begin to cross their midline with their head and eyes, which helps with brain development. Simple, fun, and so beneficial!
