Today is World Su***de Prevention Day. This year, we can’t talk about su***de prevention without talking about immigration enforcement.
At least 10 people have died by su***de in ICE custody since January 2025 — the highest number on record. Outside detention, an 11-year-old in Texas and a 20-year-old college student in Ohio died by su***de after bullying tied to their families’ immigration status and ICE.
And for everyone still here, that same fear shows up in quieter ways. Fear doesn’t always look like fear — sometimes it looks like someone quietly deciding not to go to the doctor, not to ask for help, not to tell anyone how bad it’s gotten, because asking feels like the bigger risk.
Although awareness is important, it is what we do with that information that matters. It is how we treat the people around us, whether we take their fear seriously instead of dismissing it, and whether we make room for someone to ask for help before things get to a breaking point.
Behind every number is a person who deserved to stay. You matter, no matter your immigration status.🦋✨
