Nova Scoop is a secular and inclusive home-school cooperative based in Fairfax County.

NoVa Scoop has space available for several new member families! NoVa Scoop is an inclusive, secular educational cooperative for homeschooling families in the metropolitan DC area. Our membership is predominantly students 8-18 years (grades 3-12). Please explore our webpage, novascoop.org.

Our learning community holds classes once a week (on Fridays) in Fairfax, VA. Our class offerings vary each semester- our most current schedule of classes can be found on our webpage. It is an important part of our mission of inclusivity to keep costs low, thus we operate as a true cooperative. Every member family contributes to our learning community by providing regular assistance throughout each semester.

Our Winter/Spring Session will run from January 23, 2026 through May 15, 2026, including a two week Spring Break. Registration is currently underway- and we have spaces available for students grade 3-12 (although our middle school cohort is close to full). Class choice for new members is sometimes limited, some classes fill fast! But once families join, they typically find that they have access to preferred classes in future semesters.

The Winter/Spring 2026 Session Schedule of Classes can be found here: https://novascoop.online/registration/classsched.php.

Presents for the D&D fan in your life
I teach two D&D classes a week and today several people came up to me and asked what the heck they should get their D&D loving loved one for Christmas so here you go. I’ve even included some links so you don’t have to cast about but also feel free to use these as a jumping off point. I don’t feel like making these Amazon affiliate links, but do me a favor and tip your Game Master or get them a present too (they want cash, they will blow it on dice).
1. Dice. Yeah you already have too many, but trust me they need more of them. May I suggest getting themed ones based on their other interests (videogames)? Or I bet they don’t have the ones with the liquid core yet. https://urwizards.com/collections/liquid-core
2. Minis. Your D&D fan’s game doesn’t use maps and minis? All virtual tabletop or theater of the mind? Don’t know what I am talking about? It doesn’t matter. They will love getting some little gray goblins someone 3D printed. https://www.miniaturemarket.com/wzk90063.html
3. Dice trays. It’s a tray you roll the dice in. Why not just roll them on the table? I don’t know, it’s just better! Also dice towers. https://forgedgaming.com/products/the-keep-compact-magnetic-dice-tower-and-dice-tray?variant=46185435070695
4. Dice bags. Remember when you said they had too many dice already? Give them a place to put them. Now they are gone, and you can get them more! https://darkelfdice.com/collections/dice-bags/products/d-d-mimic-dice-bag-rpg-gamer-pouch
5. D&D shirts. They go do this activity every week or month, and they need to cover their torso. https://heroesvillains.com/collections/d-d-t-shirts/products/dungeons-dragons-classic-red-raglan
6. D&D books. If they don’t already have the Player’s Handbook, get them that. Their friends are tired of letting them borrow theirs. Next get them the Monster Manual. After that, just pick anything that looks pretty, says D&D on it, and you don’t know they already have. May I recommend the Lord of the Rings D&D book? https://www.atomicempire.com/Item/326967
7. Folders, notebooks, binders, boxes, and bags for carting around all their D&D crap. https://www.elderwoodacademy.com/product/dungeon-journal-atlas/
8. The D&D movie. This Chris Pine comedy adventure movie was a little bit of an underperformer at the box office but people who play D&D really liked it and it’s sort of an instant cult classic even though they say it’s not getting a sequel. https://www.target.com/p/dungeons-38-dragons-honor-among-thieves-blu-ray-digital/-/A-88790888
9. A cape. I know it sounds too nerdy to be real, but they will wear the cape. At first it will be as a goof, only to their friend’s basement to play because hey it’s cold down there. But then they will wear it even more. And you know what, that’s cool. Seriously. https://apollooutwear.com/products/mens-cloak
10. Replica weapons. Swords, daggers, shields. It’s easy to find ones from videogames at Target. They can be foam, plastic, or real metal. They can be letter openers, props, or battle-ready. Use your judgement about their maturity level vis-a-vis what will get them expelled/arrested/impaled. https://www.museumreplicas.com/the-princess-bride-sword-of-the-dread-pirate-roberts
