Nova Labs MakerSchool
We offer authentic learning, play, and experimentation to nurture global innovators and leaders.
Operating as usual
Howdy MakerSchool Community!
Thank you for an incredible summer camp program! This year we served 140 students and offered over 40+ scholarships due to the generosity of Amazon, Inc and Fairfax City Everybody Plays grant. Our partners are an integral part of our success and community - so thank you. We appreciate the strong support from our MakerSchool community and continued support from the Nova Labs Board of Directors.
I also want to give a shout out to our incredible staff from this summer: Mr. Patrick (or Hat-trick), Ms. Kate, Ms. Erin and Mr. Charlie did amazing work as lead instructors in their particular camps. Ms. Jill and Ms Simone were our awesome assistant camp Maker-Educators. Both stepped up to teach camps on their own and subbed when necessary.
This year, MakerSchool teamed up with Nova Labs First Robotics to offer several robotics camps - and I’d like to highlight the incredible work of Ms Fatimah, Mr. Conner, Ms Audrey and Ms Chloe. We were able to create a deep and incredibly exciting program for Nova Labs First Robotics which should grow only bigger in future years.
I’d also like to highlight our partnership with Eric Deuer and STEMSkills Inc. We offered 2-day workforce development training for over 30 students with neurological differences and special needs through this partnership. It’s partnerships like this that allow Nova Labs makerspace achieve its strategic goals and make a real difference in the local community.
I want to thank our business team - Darsh on the website, Mary (of Nova Labs First Robotics fame) with social media support, Jennyfer and her Events team who handle events bookings and payments.
Lastly, but never least, I want to yet again tip my hat to Ms. Fabiana’s tireless contributions to our community here at MakerSchool. If you ever smiled with delight at your camper’s project, I guarantee Ms. Fabiana designed the kit. She came in early, stayed late and could do all the little things that took MakerSchool to the next level. She is the beating heart and soul of our little program and community. It has been a wonderful privilege to work so closely with her these last three years.
All journeys come to an end, though, and all seasons eventually change. Ms. Fabiana and I (along with so many others) started this project several years ago to serve an educational need for our children and our community during the COVID pandemic. As of the end of this summer, Ms. Fabiana and I will both be stepping away from Nova Labs MakerSchool to pursue other professional and maker opportunities, moving on to new seasons of our lives.
I want to thank each and everyone parent, camper and cheerleader for your help and support these last few years. It has been an exhilarating ride. Thank you!
If you have any questions or further suggestions for MakerSchool moving forward, you can reach out to Jalene Gelana at [email protected] and Elena Clark at [email protected].
