Next System

Next System This is a transitional period in world history. State socialism and corporate capitalism appear to be past their end dates. But what will those systems bring?

New systems of societal organization are coming. Next system studies necessarily involve research into questions of systemic design, change, and movements – or put another way, “where are we going, how will we get there, and what must we do to get there?”

As a new area or study, one purpose of next system studies is to establish space, resources, and recognition for scholarship and public engagem

ent on next system questions. Another is influencing and to some extent reorienting established disciplines around next system questions. Thus, next system scholarship involves:

* Production of practical knowledge of use to policymakers, communities, activists, and others about systemic design, change, and movements;

* Community engaged research uniting practitioners, students, and senior scholars in collaborative work; and,

* The raising of new cohorts of community leaders, policymakers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, managers, academics, and other specialists educated in the methodology and theory of next system studies.

¿Cómo pasamos de la crisis al sistema que realmente merecemos? Esa es la pregunta que impulsa los Next System Teach-Ins, y la invitación a organizar uno en tu comunidad en abril de 2027.

Para apoyar ese trabajo, lanzamos una Serie de Talleres para Organizadoras y Organizadores. El primero será el 24 de abril de 2026: "Lecciones desde el Teerritorio", con reflexiones de organizadores que marcaron la ola de 2025. Herramientas, estrategia y conexión para construir un movimiento de alcance local y vínculo global.

Nota: El taller se impartirá en inglés, pero contará con traducción simultánea.

We’re honored to host Nairuti Shastry as a part of the Next System Speaker Series. As the inaugural Director of Policy & Research at the for Economic Democracy - CED , Nairuti’s work lives at the intersection of policy, movement building, and translocal organizing.

She’s spent her career holding resource-holders accountable, supporting anchor institutions, and—as she describes it—helping communities "hospice the old and birth the new."

This conversation will offer an introduction to Community Wealth-Building.
