Next System This is a transitional period in world history. State socialism and corporate capitalism appear to be past their end dates. But what will those systems bring?

New systems of societal organization are coming. Next system studies necessarily involve research into questions of systemic design, change, and movements – or put another way, “where are we going, how will we get there, and what must we do to get there?”

As a new area or study, one purpose of next system studies is to establish space, resources, and recognition for scholarship and public engagement on next system questions. Another is influencing and to some extent reorienting established disciplines around next system questions. Thus, next system scholarship involves:

* Production of practical knowledge of use to policymakers, communities, activists, and others about systemic design, change, and movements;

* Community engaged research uniting practitioners, students, and senior scholars in collaborative work; and,

* The raising of new cohorts of community leaders, policymakers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, managers, academics, and other specialists educated in the methodology and theory of next system studies.

New report: The American Crisis — the work of a group of scholars, community leaders, and democracy practitioners — assesses the next few months of potential U.S. crises and how to prevent and prepare for them: an elections crisis, military occupation of U.S. cities, and financial, climate, and health shocks.

The 30-page report warns of a decisive six-month window where threats to election administration, constitutional governance, and civil society could collide with economic, climate, or public-health emergencies. Three crisis points:

• Interference with the 2026 elections and their peaceful outcome
• Escalation in the domestic deployment of military and paramilitary forces
• Financial, climate, public-health, or other shocks that could compound instability

The baseline: every qualified voter should be able to vote, have that vote counted, and see duly certified winners take office without obstruction.
