This is sort of strange but today I got a call from TJ Chumps in Huber Heights who told me that they had a box of photographs that were left at our 35 year reunion. Whereas I did not attend the 35 year reunion, someone who did attend brought these photographs. They are in a large blue plastic tub. I have no idea why it took TJ Chumps so long to let someone know but they found my name and number in their outlook calendar as the person who reserved the room. I went by and picked them up and I have them now. Are these someone's personal property or do they belong to our class? If they belong to our class, I can hold on to them until the next reunion but if they are the personal belongings of someone, I would like to return them. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks for your help!

JOHN J. KOSINA, FHS SKYHAWKS CLASS of 1983

John Joseph Kosina, age 55, passed away Friday, November 27, 2020, at his home in Enon, OH, due to complications from COVID. He was born in 1965 in Xenia, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank J. Kosina and mother, Mary L. Kosina.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Kosina; daughter, Amanda Kosina; son, Scott Kosina; brothers, Daniel (FHS-68) F. Kosina and Thomas (FHS-71) W. Kosina; stepdaughter, Naomi K Drake; stepson, Josiah K. Drake; nephew, Joseph Kosina; nieces, Jennifer Moore and Therese Kosina; great nephews, Benjamin, Jacob, Dominic, Gabriel and Nick; great nieces, Brandy and Gianna.

John was a graduate of Wright State University. He served 20 years in the Navy, Lt. Commander, retiring February 1, 2009.

Biography of Lieutenant Commander John J. Kosina, U.S. Navy:

LCDR Kosina graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, OH, in 1988 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

LCDR Kosina joined the Navy under the Nuclear Power Program and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1989. He reported to his first ship, USS GRAY (FF 1054), homeported in San Francisco, CA, in 1990 and served onboard as the Gunnery and Missiles Officer until 1991. While on USS GRAY he deployed for the first Persian Gulf War and various Cold War missions.

LCDR Kosina reported to USS DUBUQUE (LPD 8), homeported in Sasebo, Japan, in 1991 and served onboard as the Damage Control Assistant until 1993. While onboard USS DUBUQUE he deployed for several patrols off the coast of South Korea as a show of force to North Korean Navy units. Additionally, he deployed for several Rim of the Pacific patrols and Freedom of Navigation maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait off the the coast of China.

LCDR Kosina reported to USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69), homeported in Norfolk, VA, in 1993 and served onboard as the Damage Control Assistant until 1995. While onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER he deployed for Maritime Interdiction Operations in the Persian Gulf against Iraq, and as part of NATO Forces in the Adriatic Sea enforcing the No-Fly Zone over Bosnia and Serbia during operations in support of the former Yugoslavia.

LCDR Kosina then reported to Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, in 1995, earning a Master of Science degree in Operations Research in 1997, as well as a Naval Subspeciality of Undersea Warfare and Operations Analysis.

LCDR Kosina reported to USS SACRAMENTO (AOE 1), homeported in Bremerton, WA, in 1997 and served onboard as the Operations Officer until 2000. While onboard USS SACRAMENTO he deployed for Quick Insertion Operations off the coast of South Korea as a show of force against North Korea due to rising tensions. Additionally, he deployed for Maritime Interdiction Operations in the Persian Gulf against Iraq.

LCDR Kosina reported to USS INCHON (MCS 12), homeported in Ingleside, TX, in 2000 and served onboard as the First Lieutenant until 2001. While onboard USS INCHON he participated in Mine Warfare Command and Control operations in the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Ocean.

LCDR Kosina then reported to Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Squadron Three in Ingleside, TX, in 2001.

Dale Allen Grody, 54 of Fairborn, OH, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2019, with his family by his side at Hospice of Dayton. He was welcomed home by his grandparents and many loved ones.

Although some discussions have taken place, there is not currently a class reunion being planned for the class of 1983. We have been unable to find a chairman to plan it and have been unable to reach any consensus on our loosely assembled committee. As it stands right now, there will be an all class reunion on August 4th. Many of the classes are having a smaller get together on Friday, August 3rd. We are going to look into securing a venue for August 3rd and will update you as we know anything. If anyone would like to step into the role of planner, they would be welcomed.

Preliminary planning has now begun for our 35th High School reunion, which will take place next summer. We are currently looking for cheerful and hard-working volunteers who would like to help plan and execute the reunion. We are hoping to get a good mix of (former Park Hills and Baker) classmates so that everyone can participate and contribute.
