The Arctic ACTION Workshop concluded in Utqiagvik, where folks across Alaska and Canada gathered to share research, ideas, and progress. Curious about how community-led and Indigenous science is being conducted in the Arctic? Follow along and check out the newest blog post by Sara Wilbur to learn more!

It was wonderful to have Sara Wilbur with us in person in Utqiaġvik. Thank you to the Geophysical Institute for letting ACTION steal her for a week (not to mention all the advance planning and coordination she assisted with).

Documenting Extreme Event Impacts Throughout Alaska | ACCAP 06/04/2026

UAF’s ACCAP (Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedbess) has a webinar next Thursday (June 11) on science communication and documentation of extreme events.

Extreme Weather and Climate Impacts Fellow, Anjali Shah will explore ACCAP’s Alaska Extreme Events Library and her work to expand the breathe & depth of this unique resource on high impact weather/climate events in Alaska.

“From coastal flooding to winter rain to landslides, extreme weather significantly impacts the lives of Alaskans. This webinar will showcase the process of synthesizing information from newspaper articles, climate model outputs, National Weather Service data, and government reports into clear, accessible two- and four-page fact sheets.”

Check out the newest Strait Science presentation: Navigating Coastal Change: COMMUNITY FIRST IN SIVUQAQ, at 6:30pm AKT today! 🙌

Sivuqaq (Gambell) is experiencing rapid sea ice changes impacting everyday life. Community members listed four major concerns: erosion, health of seafoods, sustaining lifeways, and increasing industrial ship traffic. This talk brings both island and university researchers to present their results. Their work is grounded in the framework for co-producing knowledge.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to travel, conduct research, or live in the Arctic? Do you want to better understand the Arctic beyond headlines and oversimplified narratives?

Tomorrow, tune in to hear from two researchers who conducted community-based research across the Arctic. The COAST-X team will share experiences from their recent 1,986-mile snowmachine traverse. Rooted in both community and research, the expedition was designed to better understand how Arctic coastlines are changing and what those changes mean for the communities that live there.

At 11am on Wednesday 5/20/2026, tune in to the ACCAP webinar to hear from Benjamin Jones (Research Associate Professor) and Phillip Wilson (Research Professional) with the Institute of Northern Engineering, University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Gambell, AK Community Update!

While much of the world is familiar with 'April Showers Bring May Flowers', what this season brings to Gambell are walrus herds and whale pods 🌼 🐋

Gambell has deep rooted subsistence practices tied to marine mammals, dating back millennia. However, their hunters are at the mercy of the weather, and so far, only one whale has been successfully harvested for the community. Our Community-Research Lead, Charla Koozaata, shares that while one whale can provide meals for the entire community, up to eight whales can be harvested to provide long-term food security.

Follow along to get more updates from communities, and to hear about on-going research across Alaska!📍🔔
