It was wonderful to have Sara Wilbur with us in person in Utqiaġvik. Thank you to the Geophysical Institute for letting ACTION steal her for a week (not to mention all the advance planning and coordination she assisted with).

Check out the newest Strait Science presentation: Navigating Coastal Change: COMMUNITY FIRST IN SIVUQAQ, at 6:30pm AKT today! 🙌
Sivuqaq (Gambell) is experiencing rapid sea ice changes impacting everyday life. Community members listed four major concerns: erosion, health of seafoods, sustaining lifeways, and increasing industrial ship traffic. This talk brings both island and university researchers to present their results. Their work is grounded in the framework for co-producing knowledge.

Gambell, AK Community Update!
While much of the world is familiar with 'April Showers Bring May Flowers', what this season brings to Gambell are walrus herds and whale pods 🌼 🐋
Gambell has deep rooted subsistence practices tied to marine mammals, dating back millennia. However, their hunters are at the mercy of the weather, and so far, only one whale has been successfully harvested for the community. Our Community-Research Lead, Charla Koozaata, shares that while one whale can provide meals for the entire community, up to eight whales can be harvested to provide long-term food security.
Follow along to get more updates from communities, and to hear about on-going research across Alaska!📍🔔
