๐Ÿง  See you today at 1 PM in-person or online! Following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, conversations about the genocide have often been silenced or minimized. In this talk, UAF Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Christine Kindler will share how Peace Conversation Circles were created to support intergenerational dialogue between older adults who lived through the genocide and Rwandan youth.

Through a participatory action research framework, the project worked closely with survivors, including women who experienced sexual violence, to ensure the process remained safe, inclusive, and empowering. Participants reported greater perspective-taking and a renewed willingness to engage in difficult but meaningful conversations across generations.

This project explores how psychological approaches rooted in community dialogue can contribute to healing, reconciliation, and long term mental health in post-conflict societies.

All are welcome. Pizza, brownies, and drinks will be provided!

๐Ÿง โœจ A Must-Take Course for Students Interested in Clinical, Community, or Graduate Work. The Psychology Department is excited to offer PSY F480: Qualitative Social Science Research, an in-person course meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00โ€“3:30 p.m. This class is designed for students who want to deepen their ability to understand peopleโ€™s experiences through interviews, narratives, and open-ended data.

Students will gain hands-on experience designing a qualitative research project, conducting interviews, analyzing real-world data, and learning how qualitative methods add depth and context to quantitative research approaches. These skills are essential for students interested in clinical psychology, advocacy, community-based work, and graduate study.

This course fulfills a requirement for the Graduate School Preparation Concentration and builds directly on the research foundations introduced in PSY F275.

The course is taught by Christine Kindler, a clinical psychologist whose research explores trauma, memory, intergenerational storytelling, and how stories are shapedโ€”or silencedโ€”within societies. Her work bridges research, dialogue, and meaning-making in contexts of adversity.

๐Ÿ“ In person | CRN 34979
๐Ÿ“˜ Prerequisite: PSY F275

Students are welcome to contact [email protected]
to discuss whether the course is a good fit.

Psychology + Stories of Mind & Meaning | Apply to the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival! How do beliefs shape behavior? How do narratives of self, adversity, and resilience inform the human psyche?

This January, the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival (January 28โ€“30, 2026) will bring together voices of insight โ€” authors, philosophers, and thinkers โ€” whose ideas probe the human condition, mental frameworks, and how we make sense of meaning in life.

One of the festivalโ€™s featured voices is Ryan Holiday โ€” an author whose work draws deeply on stoic philosophy, personal growth, ethics, and resilience (books like The Obstacle Is the Way, Stillness Is the Key). His writing often explores how we respond to hardship, discover purpose, and shape our inner life through thought and narrative.
