The GEOS 460/660 The Dynamic Alaskan Coastline class had an epic learning adventure to Homer, Kachemak Bay and the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Rain or shine (or snow!), these students were out there soaking up knowledge and witnessing Earth's changes first hand with instructor Dr. Chris Maio. They even got to change a flat on the Nanook van!

Roger Burggraf — legendary Alaskan, Fairbanksian, and longtime supporter of education, commerce, mining, and natural resources — once created a sculpture to honor Alaska's mining history. That sculpture went on to help raise funds for Alaska Resource Education, whose mission is to educate Alaskan students about the state's natural resources and inspire them to pursue opportunities in natural resources.
The sculpture is affectionately known as “the widget.”
Every two years, the widget is passed to another organization whose work reflects Burggraf’s spirit of leadership, service, and impact. This year, NANA received the honor.
In turn, NANA Regional Corporation has gifted the widget to GeoFORCE Alaska for its two-year adoption, recognizing the program’s transformative impact on young people across Northern Alaska and the opportunities it creates through hands-on exploration, mentorship, and discovery.

Students from the GEOS 221 Introduction to Field Geology course recently returned from an adventurous trip to Capitol Reef National Park, Zion National Park, and the Petrified Forest National Park.
They had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in some of the most geologically significant places in the U.S., and use tools and tech like a jacob staff, geologic compass, GPS receivers, and mapping apps.
What an incredible and transformative experience!
