The annual Geosciences Graduate Student Camping Trip recently returned from the beautiful Brooks Range. This trip was funded by the department to introduce new students to Alaska, faculty members, and peers. After a long pause, this is the second year in a row that they have hosted the trip.

Three faculty members, seven grad students, and three guests traveled up to Galbraith Lake, stopping and exploring geological formations, fossils, and minerals along the way.

They camped out at the Arctic Circle, went fossil hunting on the side of the highway AND the side of a mountain, discovered the wonders of old gravel pits, basked in glorious mountain views, and found a new love for the game of Qwirkle.

Of course, it isn't a trip up the Dalton Hwy without a couple of flat tires too! 🛞 😅

Congratulations to Lucas Djeu for passing his defense!!! 🎉 🤩 We are so proud of the hard work and dedication Lucas has put into completing his thesis. It is no small feat!

Lucas Djeu passed his defense for his dissertation on Formaldehyde as an Indicator of Wildlife and Biogenic Hydrocarbon Emissions in Alaska yesterday. Defending one's thesis is the last major step in obtaining a doctoral degree in environmental chemistry.

Good work, Dr. Djeu 🎓️

Years of compassionate care inspired a meaningful recognition.

When Sue Carlton made a generous gift to Nanook VetServe (NVS) to help support veterinary education and outreach, she chose to honor her longtime veterinarian, Dr. Kristin Terrio of VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital in Virginia, in recognition of the exceptional care Dr. Terrio and her team have provided over the years.

To celebrate that impact, Nanook VetServe presented Dr. Terrio with a certificate of appreciation, which is now displayed in the clinic's lobby.

Led by Dr. Gregory Pietsch with UAF Veterinary Medicine Nanook VetServe partners with local rural veterinary service providers to facilitate hands-on training opportunities for veterinary medicine students. Access to veterinary care in rural Alaska is limited, but this creates a unique opportunity for students to gain invaluable clinical experience in the field and under resource constraints. Their work also furthers the One Health mission, which is to recognize the vital connection between animal, human, and environmental wellbeing.

Thank you, Dr. Terrio, for making a lasting difference in the lives of your patients, clients, and the next generation of veterinarians.

Thank you, Sue Carlton, for your generous gift to NVS, and the impact it will have on veterinary students and local communities for years to come.
