The Green Bikes Program mission is to offer students an affordable option for sustainable transportation, empower students and community members to build bike repair skills, and get bikes to individuals in need. We primarily offer rentals to UAF students as well as community members & assist all cyclers with repairs on their personal bicycles. We also encourage and assist anyone who is willing to
learn how to fix their own bikes! The University of Fairbanks Alaska's Green Bikes is a student-funded organization that offers bike rentals & mechanical help. The program was started in Fall of 2010 graduate students who submitted a funding proposal to the new RISE (Review of Infrastructure, Sustainability & Energy) Board. In Spring of 2011 three mechanics were hired & trained, & with the support and supervision of Outdoor Adventures, the program exploded in growth from then on. Starting with a meager twenty bikes in the fleet to now, working through the UAF Office of Sustainability, Green Bikes maintains seventy-four bikes, offer regular clinics & mechanic office hours, hosts bike film screenings, & are work with local officials to promote a safer environment for cyclists. We look forward for continued growth within the community by working with local bike shops and groups to offer our help with community events, including Bike to Work Week and Earth Day.
