UAF CTC Fire Science

It was the final day for the Firefighter I Academy and the state skills tests for Firefighter I and HazMat Awareness and Operations.

Meanwhile, our Head of Logistics Hanna Sutton was graduating with her Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Fire Science.📣🔥📣🎓🚒

We spent the morning at the end-of-year assembly demonstrating donning fire gear, assisting with the hose roll/ inclined drag challenge, and cheering with the senior class.

It was also a recruitment activity reminding the student body that our spring semester fire academy includes high school students and that we do participate in SkillsUSA Alaska Firefighting.

It's hard to believe that the semester ends this week and the Firefighter I Academy is preparing to take their state tests. We wrapped up the semester with HazMat Operations including diversion, diking, daming, absorption, emergency decon, and donning/ doffing the protective suits.

We've transitioned to HazMat Awareness & Operations Training over the past few weeks. We spent some time looking at transportation containers including emergency shut-offs and (simulated) foam application. We even found time to volunteer with the Tanana Valley Firefighters Association as security at the Ice Dogs Hockey matches last weekend.

The semester and the Firefighter I Academy are almost complete!

Yesterday's Firefighter I Skills Day included verticle, horizontal, positive pressure, negative pressure, and hydrolic ventilation, as well as utility location and shut-off procedures, overhaul, and search-and-rescue.

Daniel Hayes and Tyler Christensen will be going to SkillsUSA Nationals in Atlanta in June to compete for the SkillsUSA National title.

Jamie Bero, Assistant Professor of Fire Science is the SkillsUSA Alaska State Chair for Firefighting.

Beautiful Fairbanks day and perfect for some vertical ventilation training in our iFSAC Firefighter I class.

The Fairbanks FireFighter Club was represented at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Bowling Tournament. It also included co****le, guess the number of Nanooks, the Wildlife Society Deer Hunting Game, and a rock, paper, scissors tournament. Thank you Student Leadership & Involvement and ASUAF.

Tonight, several UAF CTC Fire Science students participated in the St. Baldrick's Foundation event sponsored by the Fairbanks F.O.O.L.S (Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society). This event raises funds to combat childhood cancer.
