Snack, Vote, and GO! Happening now from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at UAF Rural Student Services.
Join us for our summer scholarship workshop this Friday, March 4, at University of Alaska Fairbanks Rural Student Services! We'll be there from 3 - 6 p.m. to answer questions and help students with their scholarship applications. Hope to see you there!
Our scholarship program manager, Purestyn Milk, was one of the attendees at a beading workshop led by our very own student, Linda Nicholia (a spring 2022 scholarship recipient!), in honor of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day last week. The event was so fun and we learned so much - thank you, Linda, and thank you UAF Rural Student Services for hosting us!
Our alumni are amazing! Take Outstanding Social Work student, Taniesha Moses for example from the class of 2021. "Getting an education is important because it empowers people to change their life. It gave me the chance to heal and grow in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise. It can uplift not only the individual person, but it also positively affects the family and community as well. The most important thing I learned was that being able to read, write and speak authentically with articulation is a powerful skill to have. But I also learned that success is not only a job title or a big salary. Success is also being in touch with the land and community. It is continuing traditions and learning our language."

Where is Taniesha now you might wonder- working at her dream job, of course!

"Right after graduating, I applied for a dream job and now I work at UAF as the Indigenous Wellness Outreach Coordinator for Rural Student Services."

Thanks, Doyon Foundation for highlighting one of our amazing students!

Each month, we feature an update on one of our alumni. This month, we are pleased to highlight Taniesha Moses. “Right after graduating, I applied for a dream job and now I work at UAF as the Indigenous Wellness Outreach Coordinator for Rural Student Services,” she shares. Read more about Taniesha: https://bit.ly/TanieshaMoses.
We know it can be hard to take care of yourself during finals week, so we put together snack bags and notes of encouragement for students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks this week. We delivered the goodies to Taniesha Moses, the Indigenous Wellness Coordinator at Rural Student Services (and one of our alumni!). Good luck to all our students – we believe in you!
Happy Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month!

UAF Nanook Diversity and Action Center and Rural Student Services have packed November with so many amazing Native American Heritage Month events, activities, and workshops! Make sure you don't miss a thing by checking out their social media accounts for more details!

UAF Nanook Diversity and Action Center and Rural Student Services are hosting an Indigenous Peoples' Day Gathering Monday night filled with singing, dancing, and fry bread!

I was raised in a small, rural coastal village and was very thankful for the cultural upbringing. One of those traits that I still carry with me is sharing. As a student, and alumni of UAF, I have had the privilege to enjoy, learn, and grow in that environment. So, thank you RSS for being there and for being an encouragement throughout my years there. With that said, please take the following message in that same spirit.

✅How I improved my grades to hit the dean's list by making simple changes to my daily routine.⁣

✅During my first year at college… I hit my lowest slump as a student.. I was ill prepared... had poor habits… inadequate time management skills… had a poor mindset… and stayed up into the wee hours to stay afloat. My grades at the end-of-the year reflected this… and I was embarrassed and wondering if this was for me.⁣😪
✅The following year… I picked myself up and looked at what worked and what did not. I made the proper adjustments and began to see changes in my grades to the point where I made dean’s list several times😍, even chancellor’s list🥰, too, eventually being indoctrinated into my department’s honor society.⁣🧑‍🎓
Here are the steps I took:⁣

📅1. Mapping out my daily and weekly schedule of class lectures and setting aside time for studying, doing homework, preparing for tests, exercise, and planned adequate sleep time.⁣

📖2. Implemented a textbook note taking strategy of concepts to their associated description and definitions, of equations, of laws, and utilized my learning modality strengths of touch and sight (i.e. writing the information in a notebook and seeing it with my eyes).⁣

🧠3. Worked on removing bad habits and implementing productive ones. Strengthened my mindset for success. Incorporated health and wellness into my daily routine. These shifts I made compounded over time to yield the results that I sought after. If I can do it, you can too!!⁣

🚀Now, I have partnered with a 6 figure coaching program that will allow me to pass the torch on to young, aspiring students to be the best they can be, both academically and as a balanced person health and wellness-wise.⁣
This week has been amazing! We've seen so many RAHI alum back on Troth Yeddha' campus and they're ready to take on the semester 💪🥰🎓 We hope to see even more tomorrow at Rural Student Services's kick off event! In addition to spaghetti and frybread, RSS will be dishing out these incredible basketballs designed by Trickster Company out of Juneau until they run out! 🤩⛹️‍♀️🏀⛹️
Congratulations to the class of 2021! It was such a delight to celebrate our student's accomplishments today with Rural Student Services

This project is being completed through UAA as part of a doctoral dissertation. It is based on 4 years of research conducting focus groups in Alaska asking the question "what makes your life good." The purpose is to develop a questionnaire of Alaska Native adult quality of life that can be used within multiple settings. This project has Tribal Research Review and Alaska Area IRB approvals.
