The Alaska Native Knowledge Network (ANKN) is an AKRSI partner designed to serve as a resource for compiling and exchanging information related to Alaska Native knowledge systems and ways of knowing. Vivian Yéilk’ Mork is recognized as the 2022 Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley Scholar.
Vivian Mork was a student of Dr. Kawagley in the Masters in Cross Cultural Studies program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she was among the first students to receive a M.A. in Cross Cultural Studies with an emphasis in Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Dr. Kawagley encouraged Vivian to pursue her dreams despite the fact she didn’t fit into a Western scholarly box as an independent multi-disciplinary scholar and artist.
After Dr. Kawagley died (2011), Vivian Mork wanted to continue Dr. Kawagley’s legacy of scholarly work and encouraging others, so she
co-founded Planet Alaska, a cross-cultural business dedicated to disseminating Indigenous news and topics, environmental issues, Indigenous language revitalization, and showcasing Alaskan writers and artists. Planet Alaska is dedicated to her mentor and teacher
Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley.
Planet Alaska is many things. It is many things because as Indigenous people we are diverse with many complex layers. Planet Alaska’s business model is a business with the purpose of perpetuating culture. As Indigenous people we wear many hats in our communities and walk in many worlds. We use a portion of our online sales to perpetuate the classes we teach on traditional ecological knowledge, language, history, culture, and more. Classes are taught online, in person, and Planet Alaska has numerous articles uplifting Indigenous knowledge under the column with the same name in the Juneau Empire, Capital City Weekly, and the Planet Alaska blog. There is a Planet Alaska page, blog, website, twitter, instagram, and TikTok account. A Planet Alaska Patreon and YouTube channel to come soon sharing and uplifting the diverse cultures, languages, history, peoples, botany and ecology of Alaska.
