This is a two-week field class in volcanology offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks in cooperation with the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Kamchatka Branch of Geophysical Survey, and the Kamchatka State University in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. We are excited to announce that the 2026 field trip to Katmai National Park will take place June 6–20, 2026. Join us for an immersive backpacking expedition to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, the site of the 1912 Novarupta/Katmai eruption.

Open to advanced undergrads, grad students, and early-career geoscientists, this annual field trip offers a rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes.

Open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as early-career geoscientists, this annual field trip runs from June 10 to June 24, 2025. It is a unique opportunity to explore the site of the 1912 eruption of Novarupta/Katmai.

We are pleased to announce a new course section is now available! Join us to explore deposits of the two White River Ash eruptions in eastern Alaska and the Yukon, and learn how to use experiments to figure out where magmas are stored beneath Mt Churchill, Alaska. Open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as early-career geoscientists, this course will be held July 15 to 31, 2024.
