Dear FEA,
On May 27th, many of you received an email from your building principal that outlined the District’s Grading and Homework Policies, along with new administrative regulations (AR) that are scheduled to be implemented next year.
This came as a surprise to many, and some did not receive the email at all. A follow-up email was sent out to teachers by the District just hours before the school board meeting on Tuesday, June 2nd. I testified during that school board meeting about the lack of teacher voice in the process, and that these policies and administrative regulations were not addressed as part of the School Board’s Policy Committee.
While a handful of teachers on leadership teams may have been asked for input as the District’s email states, none of the teachers whom I spoke to who are on their building leadership teams recalled specifically discussing this or being asked to gather input from colleagues. It appears that much of the input came from administrators and district employees, rather than the classroom teachers responsible for grading and assessing student learning. Our voices and input are crucial to this conversation
I have told Dr. Meinert that I will reach out to educators to identify concerns about the policies and administrative regulations so that we can collaboratively address them. Unfortunately, during the summer months, this is difficult as many are traveling, off the grid, or working summer jobs.
FEA will offer a couple of in-person work sessions, along with a survey to help identify your concerns and possible solutions as needed. The first work session will be held on Tuesday, June 16th, from 1-2 pm, so educators working summer school can attend. Discussions from those in attendance will help me create targeted survey questions and identify a date and time for a second work session.
I truly thank all of you who raised concerns and emailed the school board or reached out to me. Our concerns are valid and need to be heard. Grading and homework policies are at the heart of our work, and we need to be at the table when these conversations are had.
Stronger together,
Danette

FEA: On May 27th many of you learned of the District’s revised grading policy. If you have concerns or questions, please email the school board and ask that the policy be pulled back for review so we as classroom educators can work collaboratively with the District to address this issue.
