🔥 How to Start a Local Sword Fighting Club! 🔥

✅ Introduction

I'm Gavin King, a martial artist with a deep passion for Chinese Sword Forms and drills. My journey took an unexpected turn when I stumbled upon a YouTube video of Scott Rodell, a teacher in historical Chinese swordsmanship.

His skill with the sword was not just impressive; it was transformative. Intrigued, I discovered he was teaching the practical application of Chinese sword forms in full contact bouts, a step beyond what I had learned.

Seizing the opportunity, I gathered some of my students and attended his seminar in Leeds, only to find ourselves outmatched but incredibly motivated.

This experience was a reality check and a source of inspiration. We lacked a local school for further training, but Rodell Laoshi, recognizing our enthusiasm, suggested a pivotal idea: starting our own study group.

He recommended a blend of attending his seminars and engaging in online lessons, a formula that had worked for other groups. Taking this advice to heart marked the beginning of an exciting chapter.

We now run thriving weekly sessions where the clash of swords echoes our growing skills and sense of community. Join me as I share how we turned a challenge into a flourishing swordsmanship club.

✅ The Power of Online Resources - Finding a Guiding Light in the Digital World

When I first thought about starting a club, I felt a bit lost. That's where the Academy of Chinese Swordsmanship run by Rodell Laoshi comes in. The Academy’s comprehensive materials became my north star.

I realized that even without a local mentor, I could still create a thriving club. The comprehensive video lessons, forum, and curriculums were not just informative but also incredibly inspiring.

✅ Adapting Online Content to Our Local Needs

Every club is unique, and ours was no exception. I took the core teachings from the Academy and tweaked them to suit our group's dynamics and goals. It was like having a virtual master guiding us but with the freedom to explore our path.

✅ Engaging Your Audience - Understanding Your Community

Before diving headfirst, I spent time understanding who in my area might be interested in Chinese swordsmanship. I visited local martial arts events, chatted with local martial artists and students, and even posted surveys online. The response was more enthusiastic than I had expected!

✅ Effective Outreach

I learned quickly that clear, passionate communication was key. I used social media, local bulletin boards, and word-of-mouth to spread the word. The trick was to convey not just the 'what' but the 'why' of our club. Why is Chinese swordsmanship fascinating? Why is our club different? Answering these questions made all the difference. Being honest and sharing the passion is the key to success.

✅ Club Planning and Organization - Setting Clear Goals

Our club needed direction, and for that, goals were essential. Did we want to focus on the historical aspect more, or were we leaning towards the full-contact fighting side? It was crucial to decide this early on.

✅ Creating the Right Environment

I was fortunate to have a martial arts school as a training ground, but that's not a prerequisite. Training can be effectively conducted in parks, community halls, or even back gardens. The key is consistency and dedication, not the location.

✅ Building Interest and Gathering Members

I reached out to the local martial arts community, using social media and local networks to drum up interest. The response was overwhelming, proving that there was a real thirst for Chinese swordsmanship in the area.

✅ Setting Up the Club - Adapting to Our Needs

While we had the advantage of a martial arts school, we adapted our training to various environments as needed. This adaptability allowed us to grow and welcome more members who didn't have easy access to traditional training spaces.

✅ Legal and Administrative Aspects - Crossing the T's and Dotting the I's

Setting up a club also means dealing with legalities and administration. From insurance to membership fees, it's important to get these details right. I often refer back to online forums for advice on these matters.

✅ Curriculum and Training - Following a Structured Path

We embraced Rodell Laoshi’s curriculum, which provided a solid foundation in both the theory and practice of Chinese swordsmanship. This structured learning path was crucial in our development as a club.

✅ Safety as a Priority - The Non-Negotiables of Safety Gear

When it comes to safety, the bare minimum is safety goggles – eyes can't be replaced! We took this advice seriously and ensured that every member was equipped with the necessary protective gear.

✅Training Weapons and Equipment

For training weapons and safety equipment, we relied on the recommendations from the Academy of Chinese Swordsmanship. Their guidance helped us choose the right gear to ensure both safety and effectiveness in training.

✅Building a Community - More Than Just Training

Our club became a community, a place where people with a shared passion for swordsmanship could come together, learn, and grow. We fostered a sense of belonging and camaraderie that went beyond the training sessions. What’s more, through the Academy, our local group is connected to a global community that has allowed us to study and compete all over the world.

✅The Journey to Success - From Novices to Competitors

In just four years, we went from novices getting our butts kicked at a seminar to making it to the finals of our first tournament. This journey wasn't just about learning how to wield a sword; it was about building resilience, camaraderie, and skill.

🚀 Conclusion

Starting a Chinese swordsmanship club without a local school is not just a dream; it's a viable reality. With the right guidance, like that from Scott Rodell and the Academy of Chinese Swordsmanship, and a commitment to learning and growth, anything is possible. Our journey is a testament to that.

If you're considering starting your own club, remember our story. With dedication, the right resources, and a commitment to safety, you too can turn your passion into a thriving community of warriors.
