Every July, our Dojang marches in the annual Fairbanks Golden Days Parade. We’ve done this for the past 25 years. Usually I post and share pictures that same day. But it’s taken a few days to process and share this.

This parade is a lot of fun! Not just for our community, but for our students as well! Getting to showcase their talents and being appreciated by thousands along the parade route!

Typically, when we reach the Grandstand,(this is where the biggest crowd is and the
parade MC introduces each entry) we do a huge demo, including many breaks and lots of those on fire.

But this year was much different. Less than a week before the parade we lost one of our students - Aiden Cowles. We decided to dedicate this years parade to him. We had one of our students make an amazing button we wore on our Doboks. We kicked, we punched, we broke boards along the route. And with each kick, with each punch and with each break, he was on our minds. When we reached the Grandstand, instead of a demo, (it just didn’t seem right) Glen Anderson the MC, read a tribute to Aiden. He then asked for a moment of silence. That silence blew my mind. A huge crowd of screaming and yelling people, most of whom didn’t even know Aiden, became silent for a few moments. That silence was deafening. It was amazing.

We want to thank our wonderful community for their support and love for Aiden. Most of you will never realize what an impact that has had on us and his family. Thank you to our Golden Heart residents!

And finally, one last thing that just floors me.

When someone breaks a board and breaks the center out of it, it is very rare. So, we call it a perfect break. It happens occasionally. Over the past 25 years, we’ve broken thousands and thousands of boards during this parade. But never have had a perfect break. This past Saturday, we had 4 perfect breaks! So I know Aiden was with us!😔🙏
