This fall, we are launching Alaska's first-ever Bachelor of Arts in Tribal Governance: a 120-credit degree developed in direct response to requests from tribes, alumni, and students across the state.

Our tribal governance program is grounded in Indigenous knowledge, values, and ways of life, built to help communities meet today's legal, economic, and social challenges while protecting cultural identity and sovereignty.

📅 Most classes start Wednesday, September 30, after the fall subsistence season
📝 Registration is open now through the first day of class

Funding from the Doyon Foundation's Language Grant Program can be used for a variety of projects, including for tuition for language courses. Cool!

In case you missed it, we're excited to announce the return of the Our Languages Grant Program with a refreshed approach designed to better support language revitalization efforts throughout the Doyon region.

Whether you're learning from an Elder, documenting fluent speakers, creating language resources, or leading a community language project, we'd love to support your work.

A new research project, the Poisonous Plants of Alaska Project, is bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and modern science to help Alaskans navigate our wild terrain safely.

Out of thousands of plant species in Alaska, only about 30 are considered toxic. By learning to spot the few plants to avoid, you can harvest with genuine peace of mind.

🌿 Want to go deeper into Alaska’s native flora? UAF’s Ethnobotany Program, located at the Kuskokwim Campus, offers hands-on courses exploring traditional plant uses, safety, and local ecology.

Plus, through the Drumbeats Alaska Consortium—part of the UAF College of Indigenous Studies—qualifying students can receive scholarships to take Ethnobotany courses! 🎓✨

Last month, Lillian Maassen, editor at the Alaska Native Language Center, travelled to the 2026 Arctic Arts Summit in Umeå, Sweden, to celebrate the highly anticipated launch of Sergie and the White Seal, an Indigenous retelling of the classic Rudyard Kipling story.

She was joined in a panel with authors Garrett Iĝayux̂ Pletnikoff and Hannah Atsaq Zimmerman and illustrator Rebecca Tornberg Båanta, to present about the book, answer audience questions, and sign copies.

A huge thank you to Tukuuludaa for collaborating on this project and the Arctic Arts Summit for hosting its launch!
