❤️‍🩹 Today at 1 PM (online or in-person) | Listening Across Generations. Following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, many local conversations about the genocide have been silenced or minimized. Dr. Christine Kindler, Assistant Professor of Psychology at UAF, will discuss Peace Conversation Circles, a project designed to foster intergenerational dialogue between older adults who experienced the genocide and Rwandan youth.

Working through a participatory action research framework, the project partnered closely with survivors including women who experienced sexual violence to ensure the dialogue process was safe, inclusive, and empowering.

The conversations created space for difficult stories to be shared, affirmed the voices of survivors, and helped build greater understanding across generations. Participants reported increased perspective-taking and a stronger willingness to engage in conversations that had long remained unspoken.

All are welcome to attend this engaging talk, followed by a brief program meeting. Pizza, brownies, and drinks will be provided.

Nichole Schmidt and Tara Petito — mother and stepmother of Gabby Petito — will visit UAF to speak about recognizing the warning signs of domestic violence and addressing the gendered dynamics of intimate partner abuse.

Gabby Petito’s case brought national attention to patterns of control, escalation and the ways warning signs can be overlooked. Since her death, her family has focused on prevention and education, working to empower young people to recognize red flags and speak up early.

For students in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies, this event offers an opportunity to engage in conversation about power, gender, victimization and community accountability.

🌈🍄 WGSS Talk Spotlight: Curious Lives. What happens when we take mushrooms seriously? In Curious Lives: Victorian Mushroom Hunters and Q***r Possibility, Dr. Samantha Botz (English & WGSS) uses fungi to explore how Victorian women quietly resisted rigid ideas about gender, science, and respectability.

The talk sparked a wide-ranging conversation about q***r ecologies, marginal knowledge, and how attention and care can become forms of resistance—then and now. It’s a powerful example of the interdisciplinary, curious, and community-driven conversations WGSS is built to foster.

🌺 Gender, Power, and Music—Past, Present, and Future. MUS/WGS 410: Women in Music History offers students the opportunity to explore how gender shapes music, culture, and power on a global scale. Offered asynchronously in Spring 2026 (CRN 35171), this interdisciplinary course examines women’s roles in music through historical, social, political, and economic lenses.

Students will investigate the biases and inequities that continue to impact women musicians worldwide, while also highlighting the work of composers and performers whose contributions have long been marginalized. Through student-driven research and analysis, the course invites participants to consider how music can be a site of resistance, storytelling, and social change.

Led by MaryCatherine Moroney, the course encourages students to find their own voice within a history that is still being written. Prerequisites can be waived, making the course accessible to students across disciplines.

Interested students can reach out to [email protected] for more information.

🌺 A Must-Take Course for Anyone Passionate About Gender, Justice, and Social Change. The WGSS Program is excited to share a powerful new trial course for Spring 2026: ACNS/PS/WGS F494: Race, Ethnicity, & Gender Law and Politics, offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students can join in person, on Zoom, asynchronously, or as part of an Honors course, making this a flexible and accessible option for all learners.

This class takes an intersectional deep dive into how gender, race, and ethnicity are shaped by today’s legal and political decisions. Students will explore how Supreme Court rulings have altered equal rights for women, people of color, and Alaska Native communities; examine how current policies affect the safety and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples; and analyze how climate change disproportionately impacts women and marginalized groups. The course also addresses the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, offering students an essential framework for understanding how systems of power create—and can help resolve—such injustices.

For students who want to understand how real change happens, this course offers an opportunity to connect theory with lived experience and to think critically about how to build a more equitable future.
